{"id":13298,"date":"2014-02-05T11:26:05","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T19:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=13298"},"modified":"2016-09-09T16:10:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-09T23:10:48","slug":"joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-animated-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/02\/joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-animated-film.html","title":{"rendered":"<i>Joseph<\/i> and the amazing Technicolor animated film"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/josephandtheamazingtechnicolordreamcoat.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/josephandtheamazingtechnicolordreamcoat-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"josephandtheamazingtechnicolordreamcoat\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13299\"><\/a>I\u2019ve seen a lot of Bible movies, and I have even seen or listened to a few Bible-themed plays and cast recordings and whatnot, but there\u2019s one production that I have never experienced in any way, shape or form, and it\u2019s a biggie: <i>Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/i>, which Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_and_the_Amazing_Technicolor_Dreamcoat\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">first composed in the 1960s<\/a>, a few years before they wrote <i>Jesus Christ Superstar<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I should probably familiarize myself with it fairly soon, though. In addition to some research I\u2019m doing on Genesis movies right now, it was also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/elton-john-adapt-amazing-technicolor-677319\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced today<\/a> that Elton John, who has experience producing family films based on classic pop hits, is collaborating with Webber and Rice on an animated adaptation of the musical, which is apparently the most-produced musical in history and especially popular with schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Elton John, of course, has worked on animated films before \u2014 and has worked with Tim Rice before! \u2014 having collaborated with him on the songs for Disney\u2019s <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/lion-king\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Lion King<\/a><\/i> (1994) and DreamWorks\u2019 <i>The Road to El Dorado<\/i> (2000). Through Rocket Pictures, he has also produced <i>Gnomeo &amp; Juliet<\/i> (2011), an animated film based on his songs, and he is currently working on a sequel to that film, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Webber\u2019s musicals have been turned into feature films over the years \u2014 starting with <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/jesus-christ-superstar\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Jesus Christ Superstar<\/a><\/i> (1973) and continuing with films like <i>Evita<\/i> (1996) and <i>The Phantom of the Opera<\/i> (2004) \u2014 but not <i>Joseph<\/i>, until now, though an adaptation starring Donny Osmond <i>was<\/i> released straight to video in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The story of Joseph and the coat of many colours has been adapted many times, of course; one of the higher-profile animated films was <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/joseph-king-of-dreams\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph, King of Dreams<\/a><\/i> (2000), a straight-to-video prequel of sorts to DreamWorks\u2019 <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prince-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Prince of Egypt<\/a><\/i> (1998).
