{"id":1377,"date":"2007-09-04T02:46:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-04T02:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/09\/the-simpsons-movie-vs-pixar-redux\/"},"modified":"2007-09-04T02:46:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-04T02:46:00","slug":"the-simpsons-movie-vs-pixar-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/09\/the-simpsons-movie-vs-pixar-redux.html","title":{"rendered":"The Simpsons Movie vs. Pixar, redux."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\"><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/simpsons-bigger-than-pixar.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Last month<\/a>, I noted that <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/fans-startled-by-flanders-newfound.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Simpsons Movie<\/a><\/i> had grossed more in its opening weekend than any Pixar film \u2014 indeed, more than any animated film that was not a sequel to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/there-is-french-and-then-there-is.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shrek<\/a><\/i> (2001) \u2014 so I figure it is only fair to post an update on that film\u2019s situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Put simply, it looks like <i>The Simpsons Movie<\/i> will become the first movie ever to gross over $70 million in its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">opening weekend<\/a> and <i>not<\/i> gross over $200 million before it leaves North American theatres.  Pixar\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/of-all-clips-for-family-values-critic.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ratatouille<\/a><\/i>, on the other hand, crossed the $200 million line in North America just this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, but here\u2019s where things get interesting.  <a href=\"http:\/\/jimhillmedia.com\/blogs\/jim_hill\/archive\/2007\/09\/04\/toon-tuesday-why-ratatouille-s-good-but-not-great-box-office-numbers-are-now-causing-problems-for-disney-s-marketing-staff.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim Hill<\/a> reports today that <i>Ratatouille<\/i> is still seen as an underperformer, at least by Pixar standards.  It took the film 65 days to cross the $200 million line, whereas every other Pixar film since 1999\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/toy-story-3-coming-in-2009.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Toy Story 2<\/a><\/i> did it in 44 days or less.  And whereas every previous Pixar film, going back to 1995\u2019s <i>Toy Story<\/i>, was in the Top 5 for its year, it looks like <i>Ratatouille<\/i> might not even make the Top 10 for 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Add to this the fact that <i>Ratatouille<\/i> is said to have cost twice as much to make as <i>The Simpsons Movie<\/i>, as well as the fact that <i>The Simpsons Movie<\/i> has done much, much better overseas than <i>Ratatouille<\/i> has, and\u2026 well\u2026 perhaps <i>The Simpsons Movie<\/i> really <i>is<\/i> doing better than Pixar after all, at least with respect to Pixar\u2019s <i>current<\/i> offerings.  Worldwide, <i>The Simpsons Movie<\/i> has earned $469.4 million so far, whereas <i>Ratatouille<\/i> has earned $373.4 million, and last year\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/newsbites-departed-babel-burning.html#5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cars<\/a><\/i> came to a halt at $462 million.<\/p>\n<p>Make of all that whatever you will.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, I noted that The Simpsons Movie had grossed more in its opening weekend than any Pixar film \u2014 indeed, more than any animated film that was not a sequel to Shrek (2001) \u2014 so I figure it is only fair to post an update on that film\u2019s situation.
