Lives!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Another day, another handful of news and blog links.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117971044.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0941811\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">S\u00f6nke Wortmann<\/a> has been tapped to direct <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/newsbites-monstrous-pope-joan-caspian.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pope Joan<\/a><\/i>, now that Volker Schl\u00f6ndorff is out of the picture.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/news.scotsman.com\/entertainment.cfm?id=1370142007\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Scotsman<\/a><\/i> reports that Rich Swingle has written a sequel to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/amazing-chariots.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chariots of Fire<\/a><\/i> (1981) called <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.richdrama.com\/BeyondtheChariots\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Beyond the Chariots<\/a><\/i> and hopes to have trailers ready for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.  Both films concern Olympic runners <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_Liddell\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eric Liddell<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Abrahams\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harold Abrahams<\/a>, the former of whom went on to be a missionary in China who died in a Japanese concentration camp.  (Hmmm, will China\u2019s Communist government embrace the film for showing how they suffered under the Japanese, or will they reject it for depicting a Christian missionary positively?)  Presumably this is an entirely different project from <i>With Wings as Eagles<\/i>, the proposed sequel that <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/amazing-anachronism.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amazing Grace<\/a><\/i> co-producer <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/are-any-more-cs-lewis-movies-in-works.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ken Wales<\/a> has talked about.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> Greenpeace co-founder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/vancouversun\/news\/editorial\/story.html?id=67623834-a1af-42e4-91cb-28492a462651\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Patrick Moore<\/a> takes issue with aspects of Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s new documentary <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0492931\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The 11th Hour<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a lifelong environmentalist, I say trees can solve many of the world\u2019s sustainability challenges. Forestry is the most sustainable of all the primary industries that provide us with energy and materials. Rather than cutting fewer trees and using less wood, DiCaprio and Berman ought to promote the growth of more trees and the use of more wood. . . .<\/p>\n<p>To address climate change, we must use more wood, not less. Using wood sends a signal to the marketplace to grow more trees and to produce more wood. That means we can then use less concrete, steel and plastic \u2014 heavy carbon emitters through their production. Trees are the only abundant, biodegradable and renewable global resource.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/lives-of-others-three-more-takes.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Lives of Others<\/a><\/i> director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck talks to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/ew\/article\/0,,20053602,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/i> about the late star Ulrich M\u00fche:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>How did M\u00fche\u2019s upbringing in communist Berlin contribute to his portrayal of the Stasi agent?<\/b><br>This film allowed him to close a chapter in his life, to work through things again that had not yet been processed fully by him. The movie\u2019s about the leading artists in the GDR around 1984, and that\u2019s exactly what he was. He had been under surveillance from the moment he left high school. [He gave a speech] on the 4th of November [1989, just days before the Berlin Wall came down]. You could feel the political turmoil, but people didn\u2019t know\u2026[if] this could turn into another Tiananmen Square or Prague Spring. He was one of the organizers of the big demonstration [at the Berlin Wall] and talked before half a million people saying, \u201dLook, we have to make sure that this turmoil that we\u2019re going through at the moment is used for something positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s crazy that the scenario is exactly flip-flopped \u2014 that he plays the Stasi agent here.<\/b><br>It was strange \u2014 he was an incredibly courageous man in spirit and in will, but he didn\u2019t have the physical constitution of a hero. He was positioned at the Berlin Wall as a sniper during his obligatory military service, and that got to him so much that at age 19, he collapsed on duty with stomach ulcers. He lost half his stomach \u2014 that was the origin of the ailment that killed him 35 years later.<\/p>\n<p><b>So it all comes back full circle\u2026<\/b><br>Sometimes I\u2019d ask him, \u201dWhy does all your anxiety always express itself in illness?\u201d And he said, \u201dI tend not to be outward going that much. All my emotions go back in.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> Remember how Bryan Singer promised to \u201cgo all <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/star-trek-xi-more-casting-news.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wrath of Khan<\/a><\/i> on\u201d the sequel to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2004\/03\/newsbites-burial-hermione-300-escape.html#6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Superman Returns<\/a><\/i> (2006)?  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmick.co.uk\/2007\/08\/whats-gonna-come-of-man-of-steel.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Film Ick<\/a> claims to have received some very spoiler-ish information about Singer\u2019s sequel, and if there is <i>any<\/i> truth to one of the bigger spoilers \u2014 and I do take this with a <i>huge<\/i> grain of salt \u2014 then I have to say this next film sounds more like <i>The Search for Spock<\/i> (1984).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">6.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/30\/movies\/30comp.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a><\/i> has a story looking at how the fortunes of New Line Cinema are now resting on <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/kidman-golden-compass-isnt-anti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another day, another handful of news and blog links. 1.
