There are two weekends left, to be sure, but the last several days before Labour Day are usually pretty slow.  So, with all that said, here is another way to look at the dismal box-office figures for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/evan-almighty-still-sinking-now.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Evan Almighty<\/a><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Evan Almighty<\/i> was one of the year\u2019s most expensive movies, and it faced almost no competition on its opening weekend; the only other new wide releases that week were <i>1408<\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/should-actors-offscreen-persona-matter.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Mighty Heart<\/a><\/i>, neither of which were particularly big deals. Two of those films \u2014 <i>Rush Hour 3<\/i> and <i>Superbad<\/i> \u2014 came out in just the last two weeks and seem to be on track to hit that milestone in the relatively near future.  The third film, of course, is <i>Evan Almighty<\/i>, which is currently stalled at $98.6 million.  And by all accounts, it cost about <i>ten times<\/i> as much to produce <i>Evan Almighty<\/i> as it cost to produce <i>Superbad<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, films that did <i>not<\/i> open at #1 but have gone on to gross over $100 million anyway include <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/is-katherine-heigls-character-poorly.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Knocked Up<\/a><\/i> (Jun 1 \u2014 $30.7 million \u2014 current cume is $147.4 million), <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/two-more-movies-not-screened-for.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Live Free or Die Hard<\/a><\/i> (Jun 29 \u2014 $33.4 million \u2014 current cume is $132.8 million) and <i>Hairspray<\/i> (Jul 20 \u2014 $27.5 million \u2014 current cume is $103.3 million).  That\u2019s right, at least two films had lower opening weekends than <i>Evan Almighty<\/i> but have outgrossed it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>AUG 26 UPDATE:  <i>Rush Hour 3<\/i> passed the $100 million mark two days ago, and <i>Superbad<\/i> is now the third film this summer to be #1 for two weeks in a row; it is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/showdowns\/chart\/?view=daily&amp;id=apatowvs.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">keeping pace<\/a> with <i>Knocked Up<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The summer movie season is pretty much over now.
