Anne Thompson<\/a> of Variety<\/i> says the trailer below for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story<\/a><\/i> \u2014 a Judd Apatow-produced parody of recent biopics like Ray<\/a><\/i> (2004) and Walk the Line<\/a><\/i> (2005) \u2014 \u201csank like a stone\u201d when it premiered at Comic-Con last month.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/iframe> Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4yzjtnj8Y3U\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> if the video file above doesn\u2019t play properly.<\/p>\nAs a parody of a particular kind of movie genre, I think this film may have its merits, based on what we see here. But many of these scenes are based directly on scenes from Walk the Line<\/i> that revolved around the intensely personal pain that drove <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/11\/hello-im-walking-line.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Johnny Cash<\/a> for much if not all of his life\u2026 and when I remember how respectful, if not reverent, everyone was towards Cash on <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/11\/walk-line-interviews-are-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the junket<\/a> for that film, which came out only two years after he died\u2026 Well, \u201cblasphemy\u201d might be a strong word for what this trailer does, but I imagine some of his fans might feel that way.<\/p>\nLet\u2019s put it this way. It is one thing for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/6305922756\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">This Is Spinal Tap<\/a><\/i> (1984) to have gags about drummers choking to death on their vomit \u2014 a fate that has, sadly, befallen more than one rock star \u2014 or for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00004ZEU2\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash<\/a><\/i> (1978) to parody nearly every aspect of the Beatles\u2019 public persona once they put themselves on the world stage. (In that case, George Harrison actually gave the parody his imprimatur by playing a small part in the film.)<\/p>\nBut Walk Hard<\/i> tries to milk laughs from things that took place before<\/i> Cash offered up his life for public consumption, such as the fact that his brother died<\/i> when they were both still children, or the fact that Cash\u2019s father resented him for being the son that lived. Heck, I\u2019m even a little uncomfortable with the way the film tries to milk laughs from the collapse of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/11\/cashs-daughter-doesnt-toe-movie-line.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cash\u2019s first marriage<\/a> (though I do love the punchline that follows \u201cI do believe in you\u2026\u201d). <\/p>\nEven though these aspects of Johnny Cash\u2019s life were dramatized in a major, popular, Oscar-winning movie, they still feel somehow private, almost confessional. They were entrusted<\/i> to us.
