Now, after a couple weeks of sometimes baffling controversy, the studio is taking a different tack, announcing yesterday that it will <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2014\/film\/news\/noah-marketing-its-not-exactly-the-bibles-story-1201123012\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">add a disclaimer<\/a> to many of the upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/noah-marketing-tweaked-at-urging-684305\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ads and trailers<\/a> for the film to clarify that it is an \u201cimaginative\u201d adaptation of the story and not a \u201cliteral\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/noah-explanatory-message-religious-groups\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Wrap<\/a>, for its part, reports that the disclaimer has been added to the film as well, though neither of the trade papers linked above support that claim.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The disclaimer itself will read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ve seen these sorts of disclaimers before. In fact, this is almost exactly identical to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2013\/05\/credits-where-credit-is-due-in-bible-films.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the disclaimer that appeared<\/a> at the beginning of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prince-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Prince of Egypt<\/a><\/i> (1998):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h14m34s23.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h14m34s23.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h14m34s23\" width=\"590\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14624\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But we saw something similar at the beginning of each episode of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/bible-2013\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Bible<\/a><\/i> (2013), too:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h26m16s179.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/02\/vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h26m16s179.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"vlcsnap-2014-02-27-23h26m16s179\" width=\"590\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14626\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <i>Noah<\/i> disclaimer may be different from the others, though, not just because it might not appear in the film itself, but also because it has been attached to the marketing materials after weeks, if not months, of long-simmering controversy over the content of the movie. It seems like a <i>reaction<\/i> to a marketing problem, in other words, rather than a natural outgrowth of the film\u2019s awareness campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The disclaimer was added to the film\u2019s marketing campaign at the suggestion of National Religious Broadcasters CEO Jerry Johnson, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/02\/noah-the-biblical-advisor-speaks-and-new-photos.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">led a panel discussion of the film<\/a> last Sunday.
