Twelve days ago<\/a>, it was announced that 30-year-old Zachary Quinto<\/a> will play Spock in the new Star Trek<\/i> movie. The role was created, of course, by Leonard Nimoy<\/a>, who was 35 when the series began in 1966 \u2014 though he had played the role a couple years earlier, too, in the long-shelved first pilot \u2018The Cage<\/a>\u2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Ain\u2019t It Cool News<\/a> claims to have the casting breakdowns for some of the movie\u2019s other characters \u2014 including their ages:<\/p>\n

  1. James Kirk<\/a> \u2014 looking for an actor aged 23 to 29 \u2014 William Shatner<\/a> was 35 when the series began\n<\/li>\n
  2. Leonard (Bones) McCoy \u2014 looking for an actor aged 28 to 32 \u2014 DeForest Kelley<\/a> was 46 when the series began\n<\/li>\n
  3. Uhura \u2014 looking for an actress aged 25ish \u2014 Nichelle Nichols<\/a> was 33 when the series began\n<\/li>\n
  4. Sulu \u2014 looking for an actor aged 25 to 32 \u2014 George Takei<\/a> was 29 when the series began\n<\/li>\n
  5. Montgomery (Scotty) Scott \u2014 looking for an actor aged 28 to 32 \u2014 James Doohan<\/a> was 46 when the series began<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Assuming this information is correct, it would seem to kill those old rumours<\/a> about 52-year-old Gary Sinise<\/a> and 39-year-old Daniel Dae Kim<\/a> being considered for McCoy and Sulu, respectively.<\/p>\n

    Meanwhile, IGN.com<\/a> passes on the rumour that Tom Cruise<\/a> \u2014 who has always seemed kind of Vulcan, to me \u2014 is being approached for a cameo as Christopher Pike<\/a>, who was Captain of the Enterprise<\/i> before Kirk. The role was originally played by Jeffrey Hunter<\/a>, who may be best known for co-starring with John Wayne in The Searchers<\/a><\/i> (1956) and playing an armpit-hair-free Jesus in King of Kings<\/a><\/i> (1961). Hunter was 38 when he played Pike in \u2018The Cage\u2019, and according to the official chronology, that story took place 11 years before Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise<\/i>; Cruise is 45.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
