The film will be directed by Norman Stone, whose credits include the original C.S. Lewis biopic <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/congratulations-to-pacific-theatre.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shadowlands<\/a><\/i> (1985).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Regarding his new film\u2019s main character, Stone says: \u201cHe was not a saintly saint and this film will be more of a character study and a political thriller than a Christian epic. Columba will not wear a halo. It needs big-screen treatment and in Jeremy we have the right person to deliver the performance we are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/film\/news\/e3i8d89a411d4e37fb50e67fe76a41c3621\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> says <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0485601\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Secret of Kells<\/a><\/i>, an animated film inspired by the 8th-century illuminated Bible known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Book_of_Kells\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Book of Kells<\/a>, will have a brief theatrical run in Los Angeles next month in order to qualify for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It is one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oscars.org\/press\/pressreleases\/2009\/20091111.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">20 films<\/a> that have been submitted for the award.<\/p>\n<p>The film was produced by the Irish firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartoonsaloon.ie\/index.php\/2009\/06\/feature-film-the-secret-of-kells\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cartoon Saloon<\/a>, and its subject matter is deeply Irish as well \u2014 but as <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118003768.html?categoryid=3632&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2566\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> noted several months ago, the work on this film spanned several countries on two or three continents:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There\u2019s a scene in \u201cThe Secret of Kells,\u201d when an eighth-century Irish monk is rummaging through his papers and throwing them in the air, which sums up the sheer international complexity of the project.<\/p>\n<p>It was animated by a Polish artist working in a Hungarian studio, then cleaned up by a Mongolian who could only communicate with Irish director Tomm Moore via a translator from Transylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secret of Kells,\u201d co-directed by Moore and Nora Twomey, was made across five countries \u2014 Ireland, France, Belgium, Hungary and Brazil \u2014 and funded by a patchwork of co-production coin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call it Franken-finance, pulling the pieces from different parts from Europe,\u201d says producer Paul Young.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The film is currently slated for an American release in March; I don\u2019t know if it will be coming to Canada as well.
