Now the critics are boycotting the studio\u2019s films \u2014 to a point, at least.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radaronline.com\/exclusives\/2007\/07\/slighted-critics-boycott-fox-films.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Radar Online<\/a> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to the Chicago Film Critics Association, 20th Century Fox has instituted a policy of favoritism in the Windy City, providing special treatment to select film reviewers. Others, it is charged, are not given adequate time to craft stories between seeing a movie and its release\u2014or are shut out of screenings entirely. . . .<\/p>\n<p>In response CFCA has instituted a boycott against Fox releases, vowing to write nothing but reviews for its movies, withholding the more coveted coverage in features, profiles, and interviews. And they\u2019re calling on their film critic brethren to join in. \u201cWe\u2019ve hit a common nerve among all critics\u2019 organizations who are suffering under the same kind of tyrannical rule,\u201d [CFCA president Dann] Gire told <i>Radar<\/i>. \u201cWe have had amazing support from all over the country.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fox, you may recall, is also the studio that threatened to <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/fox-still-threatening-to-withhold-its.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">withhold its movies from Canada<\/a> because of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/newsbites-camp-hobbit-piracy-tennapel.html#3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">alleged<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/movie-studios-can-be-nice-to-canada.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">piracy<\/a> concerns.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/chicago_critics.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> at Hollywood Elsewhere gives his two bits.<\/p>\n<p>JUL 18 UPDATE:  Fox <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/fox_eplosion_ov.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">isn\u2019t exactly happy<\/a> with Jeffrey Wells.<\/p>\n<p>JUL 19 UPDATE:  Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcnblogs.com\/thehotblog\/archives\/2007\/07\/old_dogs_new_tr.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Poland<\/a> at The Hot Blog offers his take.<\/p>\n<p>UPPERDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/fox_hates_criti.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> responds to David Poland\u2019s piece, and he notes that Fox has <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/20th_century_fo_2.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">suddenly and mysteriously cancelled its promotional appearances<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comic-con.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Comic-Con<\/a> next week.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of one of Wells\u2019s anonymous colleagues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFox has declared war. We\u2019ve been on the receiving end of this for a few years, and no one gave a shit because it was just us. Now that Fox is widening their attitude to everyone, people are now paying attention. Fox hates critics. Fox hates the press. Fox hates their audience. That is the truth.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He forgot to mention that Fox hates Canada, too.<\/p>\n<p>UPPESTDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviemarketingmadness.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/19\/what-does-fox-think-it-is-apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chris<\/a> at Movie Marketing Madness chimes in.<\/p>\n<p>JUL 20 UPDATE:  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/movies\/la-et-online20jul20,1,5630682.story?ctrack=6&amp;cset=true\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereeler.com\/features\/some_thoughts_on_the_chicago_fire.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Reeler<\/a><\/i> cover the ongoing saga, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/fox_hissyfitter.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> has a few more thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sad that Fox Searchlight is getting caught up in this and that its PR efforts on behalf of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0448134\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sunshine<\/a><\/i> etc. are being boycotted, since they have actually been very, very, very good about letting critics like me into screenings.  Their publicists are completely separate from the publicists who work for \u201cBig Fox\u201d \u2014 the term Jeffrey Wells has used for the larger, more mainstream branch of the studio.<\/p>\n<p>UPPERDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcnblogs.com\/thehotblog\/archives\/2007\/07\/stupid_is_as_st.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Poland<\/a> posts the Chicago film critics\u2019 e-mail to Fox in its entirety, and criticizes the \u201cantics\u201d of Dann Gire.<\/p>\n<p>UPPESTDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/cfca_vs_fox_war.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> reports that the \u201cwar\u201d is now \u201cover\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>JUL 25 UPDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com\/exclusive-chicago-film-critics-association-show-how-wrong-la-times-story-was\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nikki Finke<\/a> at Deadline Hollywood Daily posts a letter from Gire to his fellow critics, alleging inaccuracies in the <i>Los Angeles Times<\/i> story.  <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/cfa_fox_squabbl.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> also has an update.<\/p>\n<p>UPPERDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcnblogs.com\/thehotblog\/archives\/2007\/07\/chicago_film_cr.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Poland<\/a> also posts the letter, with comments.<\/p>\n<p>JUL 27 UPDATE:  <i>The Los Angeles Times<\/i> prints a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/custom\/corrections\/la-a2-correx26.2jul26,1,2450352.story?ctrack=1&amp;cset=true\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">correction<\/a> \u2014 but take it from me, there is nothing \u201calleged\u201d about 20th Century Fox\u2019s discrimination against online critics.
