Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that at least three \u201chorror\u201d films produced by Val Lewton<\/a> in the 1940s might be remade in the near future:<\/span><\/p>\n

Evolution Entertainment\u2019s horror division Twisted Pictures has formed a joint venture with RKO Pictures and plans to remake four genre pics from the RKO library.<\/p>\n

The companies will co-finance development and production of \u201cThe Body Snatcher,\u201d a 1945 Robert Wise-directed thriller that starred Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff; the 1943 pic \u201cI Walked With a Zombie\u201d; and the 1946 Karloff starrer \u201cBedlam<\/a>.\u201d They\u2019ve yet to select the fourth title from the RKO vault.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Interestingly, two of these titles have been remade before. The Body Snatcher<\/i> is based on a short story<\/a> by Robert Louis Stevenson which has been adapted several times<\/a> since; and I Walked with a Zombie<\/i> was apparently remade a few years ago by the \u2018Tales from the Crypt\u2019 gang as a movie called Ritual<\/a><\/i> (2001).<\/p>\n

Needless to say, I don\u2019t hold out much hope that these new remakes will be any good. The only other Val Lewton film that has been remade, as far as I know, is Cat People<\/i> (1942), and Paul Schrader\u2019s 1982 version<\/a> was quite inferior, as I recall. Plus, Variety<\/i> mentions that the most recent remake of an RKO film was, of all things, Are We Done Yet?<\/a><\/i> \u2014 in which Ice Cube took over the role created by Cary Grant in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House<\/a><\/i> (1948).
