So far, I cannot think of a single case in which the PG or PG-13 sequel was all that good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, I am wondering something slightly different.  How many franchises have begun on a PG-13 level and then down-shifted to the PG level?  I note that there are at least two such sequels coming out in the next couple of weeks \u2014 can you think of any more?<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li><i>Doctor Dolittle<\/i> (1998; PG-13)<\/li>\n<li><i>Dr. Dolittle 2<\/i> (2001; PG)\n<\/li>\n<li><i>The Mask of Zorro<\/i> (1998; PG-13)<\/li>\n<li><i>The Legend of Zorro<\/i> (2005; PG)\n<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/carell-almighty.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bruce Almighty<\/a><\/i> (2003; PG-13)<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/movies-with-religious-themes-are-being.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Evan Almighty<\/a><\/i> (2007; PG)\n<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/09\/mr-fantastic-is-william-wilberforce.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fantastic Four<\/a><\/i> (2005; PG-13)<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/two-more-movies-not-screened-for.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer<\/a><\/i> (2007; PG)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Note:  I have no thesis to make here.  Not yet, at any rate.  Whereas I can safely say that I have never seen a good PG-13 sequel to an R-rated movie, I don\u2019t expect to notice any particular trend among PG-rated sequels to PG-13 movies \u2014 mainly because there is no real practical difference between the two ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and while we\u2019re at it, how about franchises that started out PG and then shifted down to the ultra-safe G?<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li><i>The Santa Clause<\/i> (1994; PG)<\/li>\n<li><i>The Santa Clause 2<\/i> (2002; G)<\/li>\n<li><i>The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause<\/i> (2006; G)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">If you think of any more examples, for either list, post \u2019em in the comments, and I\u2019ll update these lists as required.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, inspired by the kerfuffle over the rating for Live Free or Die Hard, I started a list of movie franchises which began on an R-rated or X-rated note and then shifted down to the PG-13 or PG-rated level as the sequels came out.
