{"id":15065,"date":"2014-03-07T16:21:09","date_gmt":"2014-03-08T00:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=15065"},"modified":"2014-03-11T16:15:52","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T23:15:52","slug":"noah-art-show-opens-and-an-update-on-the-soundtrack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/noah-art-show-opens-and-an-update-on-the-soundtrack.html","title":{"rendered":"<i>Noah<\/i> art show opens, and an update on the soundtrack"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-da1453163.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-da1453163-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Opening of Fountains of the Deep: Visions of Noah and the Flood\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15071\"><\/a>With three weeks to go before <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/noah-2014\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i> opens in theatres, directer Darren Aronofsky hosted the opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noahmovie.com\/art-show\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">an art show<\/a> loosely connected to his film last night.<\/p>\n<p><i>Fountains of the Deep: Visions of Noah and the Flood<\/i>, which will be open to the public in New York until March 29 (i.e. one day after the film comes out in theatres), features interpretations of the original biblical story \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstshowing.net\/2014\/take-a-look-inside-darren-aronofskys-stunning-nyc-noah-art-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in painting, in drawing, in photography, in sculpture<\/a>\u201d \u2014 and it even includes four clips from the film, which are visible through peep holes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->At least two of these clips <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/03\/07\/darren-aronofsky-s-noah-art-show-reveals-footage-of-rock-monster-and-fiery-angel.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">feature the Nephilim<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The footage\u2013\u2013which is presented without sound and can be viewed by looking through four viewfinders positioned inside large rectangular columns\u2013\u2013features a four-armed rock monster, wielding a chain and sword and knocking people away from the ark. In another clip, an angel made from what appears to be molten lava crawls out of the earth. (Funny enough, the backs of one of the columns was propped wide open during the exhibition, allowing any would-be bootlegger to take the footage and upload it to the Internet.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aronofsky has already tweeted several images from the exhibit, which I\u2019ve embedded at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/02\/new-pictures-music-and-a-dialogue-clip-at-the-noah-website.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">this blog post<\/a>, but you can see even more images <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstshowing.net\/2014\/take-a-look-inside-darren-aronofskys-stunning-nyc-noah-art-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comingsoon.net\/news\/weekendwarriornews.php?id=115702\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Note also Aronofsky\u2019s intro to the exhibit, tweeted by The Film Stage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DarrenAronofsky\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@DarrenAronofsky<\/a>'s statement on Fountains of the Deep. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23NoahArtShow&amp;src=hash\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">#NoahArtShow<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/MijBKNnkpD\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/MijBKNnkpD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Film Stage (@TheFilmStage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheFilmStage\/statuses\/441751318286594048\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">March 7, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At last night\u2019s opening, Aronofsky also spoke with a reporter from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2014\/film\/news\/noah-director-darren-aronofsky-there-isnt-really-a-controversy-1201127481\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> and told her that \u201cthere isn\u2019t really a controversy\u201d over his film:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe controversy is all about the unknown and about the fear of people trying to exploit a Bible story,\u201d Aronofsky said Thursday at a Gotham art exhibit promoting the film\u2019s March 28 release. \u201cIt will all disappear as soon as people start seeing the film.\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe film was made for believers and non-believers,\u201d helmer explained before guests arrived. \u201cI\u2019m more concerned about getting non-believers into the theater or people who are less religious. A lot of people are thinking, \u2018Oh. I don\u2019t want to go see a Bible movie,\u2019 but we completely shook up all expectations and people will see that as soon as they sit down and watch the movie. That is kind of what this art show is all about.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aronofsky also commented on the making of <i>Noah<\/i>, which \u2014 having a budget more than double that of all his previous films combined \u2014 was the first of his films on which he was not guaranteed final cut:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI come from a place where I have very limited resources and I keep making what I have better and better and better,\u201d helmer said. \u201cI think Paramount was about just trying everything that was possible. I\u2019m very meticulous in my planning stage so I felt that it wasn\u2019t going to fit together in different ways. The puzzle didn\u2019t work that way, but you do learn things from the process (of not having final cut). It\u2019s just a little bit painful. I\u2019d rather just keep working on something and polishing it more and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studio re-cuts followed by test screenings of the $125 million pic made the 45-year-old director reflect on his next professional step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love big movies and small movies and television,\u201d helmer said. \u201cI love storytelling, but I\u2019m not going to make another (nine figure budget film) tomorrow. I need a break.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-soundtrack.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-soundtrack-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"noah-soundtrack\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15082\"><\/a>It does not sound like any of Clint Mansell\u2019s music for the film was included in the exhibit (or, if it was, none of the reports I have read have mentioned it so far). But fans of Mansell and his previous collaborations with Aronofsky won\u2019t have to wait too long to hear his score; according to Amazon, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00IPGGEVU\/petertchatta\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">comes out on CD<\/a> March 25, three days before the film.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, a search for \u201cnoah\u201d at the Nonesuch website turns up a song called \u2018Mercy: And He Remembered\u2019, which is described as \u201cTrack 21 on Noah: Music from the Motion Picture by Clint Mansell + Kronos Quartet\u201d \u2014 but clicking on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonesuch.com\/albums\/noah-soundtrack\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the link<\/a> takes you to an \u201caccess denied\u201d page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-nonesuch-search-a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/noah-nonesuch-search-a.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"noah-nonesuch-search-a\" width=\"590\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15091\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>March 11 update:<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/flavorwire.com\/444604\/fountains-of-the-deep-artwork-inspired-by-darren-aronofskys-noah-nsfw\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Flavorwire<\/a> also has a post on the art show, with a few pictures and quotes from Aronofsky and others that have not appeared elsewhere yet.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four clips from Darren Aronofsky&#8217;s film are featured in an art show taking place in New York this month.
