As a Bible-movie connoisseur, I could not help but notice the first few paragraphs of this Variety<\/a><\/i> story:<\/span><\/p>\n

Egypt\u2019s Media Production City<\/a> has announced three projects set to lens in the 21-million-square-feet studio complex.<\/p>\n

Producer John Heyman\u2019s $130 million \u201cNefertiti\u201d project, Exodus Films\u2019 $15 million \u201cThe Exodus Scrolls\u201d and Blighty shingle Young Legends\u2019 $5 million \u201cYoung Cleopatra\u201d have all inked deals with Egypt\u2019s largest film complex.<\/p>\n

A media free zone with 31 video and cinema studios, the complex was opened by government decree in February 2000. Lensing on \u201cYoung Cleopatra\u201d is set to start in November. \u201cNefertiti\u201d is slated to start its two-month shoot in February. The long-in-gestation mega-project is a co-production with Egyptian shingle Misr Intl. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Initially, my eyes were drawn to The Exodus Scrolls<\/i>. Based on the titles alone, it would seem that this studio is specializing in historical epics, so of course I wondered if this particular movie might be about Moses and company \u2014 either by depicting the events of the Exodus directly, or by using them as background to another sort of story, a la Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/a><\/i> (1981).<\/p>\n

But a few seconds of Googling reveals that Nefertiti<\/i> itself may be about Moses, on some level. The film will be based on Ahmed Osman\u2019s book Moses and Akhenaten: The Secret History of Egypt at the Time of the Exodus<\/a><\/i>, which apparently posits that these two men were actually the same person. And an item at Osman\u2019s website<\/a> states that this film will be about \u201cthe love affair between pharaonic Queen Nefertiti and the Biblical Prophet Moses\u201d.<\/p>\n

Given that controversies have erupted<\/a> in Egypt over attempts to portray biblical heroes in film \u2014 which is forbidden by certain Islamic traditions \u2014 I would not be surprised if this film played down the Moses angle and played up the Akhenaten angle.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, this would not be Heyman\u2019s first movie to deal with ancient or biblical history; he was also a producer on Jesus<\/a><\/i> (1979), Campus Crusade\u2019s word-for-word adaptation of Luke.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
