(I will never forget the local critic who told me after a screening of Reggio\u2019s <i>Naqoyqatsi<\/i> that he found <i>Baraka<\/i> \u201cvomitous\u201d.)  But I also know people who like <i>Baraka<\/i> better because its soundtrack uses tribal chants and the likes of Dead Can Dance rather than the music of Philip Glass, which apparently has its detractors.  Personally, I am a bigger fan of <i>Koyaanisqatsi<\/i> than of <i>most<\/i> films \u2014 it\u2019s in <a href=\"http:\/\/peter.chattaway.com\/movies\/topten.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my all-time top four<\/a> \u2014 but I think <i>Baraka<\/i> is different enough to be interesting in its own way.  So I was intrigued to read in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117965240.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> today that Fricke has begun shooting a \u201csequel\u201d to <i>Baraka<\/i>, called <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0770802\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Samsara<\/a><\/i>.  Fricke\u2019s quasi-documentary is, of course, not to be confused with Pan Nalin\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/samsara-director-gunning-for-buddha.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Samsara<\/a><\/i> (2001), which was a dramatic film about a <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> monk, or with any of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/find?s=all&amp;q=samsara\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">several other films<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know some people who dismiss or outright loathe Ron Fricke\u2019s Baraka (1992) because they think it is a mere \u201cknock-off\u201d of Godfrey Reggio\u2019s Koyaanisqatsi (1983), which Fricke shot.
