I know some people who dismiss or outright loathe Ron Fricke\u2019s Baraka<\/a><\/i> (1992) because they think it is a mere \u201cknock-off\u201d of Godfrey Reggio\u2019s Koyaanisqatsi<\/a><\/i> (1983), which Fricke shot. (I will never forget the local critic who told me after a screening of Reggio\u2019s Naqoyqatsi<\/i> that he found Baraka<\/i> \u201cvomitous\u201d.) But I also know people who like Baraka<\/i> better because its soundtrack uses tribal chants and the likes of Dead Can Dance rather than the music of Philip Glass, which apparently has its detractors. Personally, I am a bigger fan of Koyaanisqatsi<\/i> than of most<\/i> films \u2014 it\u2019s in my all-time top four<\/a> \u2014 but I think Baraka<\/i> is different enough to be interesting in its own way. So I was intrigued to read in Variety<\/a><\/i> today that Fricke has begun shooting a \u201csequel\u201d to Baraka<\/i>, called Samsara<\/a><\/i>. Fricke\u2019s quasi-documentary is, of course, not to be confused with Pan Nalin\u2019s Samsara<\/a><\/i> (2001), which was a dramatic film about a Buddhist<\/a> monk, or with any of several other films<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
