\"\"<\/a>Variety<\/a><\/i> has a story on Vera Fried, the now-retired teacher who inspired Darren Aronofsky to write an award-winning poem about Noah shortly before his 13th birthday. She attended the New York premiere of Aronofsky\u2019s film<\/a> last night, and she makes a few amusing comments about how he tracked her down years later, and how he seemed to have lost his knack for good punctuation in the interim.<\/p>\n

She also reveals that she actually has two<\/i> scenes in the film \u2014 one with Russell Crowe, which has been public knowledge for at least six weeks<\/a>, and another one in which she plays one of the floating corpses, presumably in Noah\u2019s vision of the Flood.<\/p>\n

Before the screening last night, Aronofsky got his former teacher to read aloud the poem that started it all. Here it is, as transcribed by Variety<\/i>:<\/p>\n

The Dove
\nA Poem by Darren Aronofsky
\nJanuary 13, 1982<\/p>\n

Evil was in the world
\nThe laughing crowd
\nLeft the foolish man at his ark
\nFilled with animals
\nWhen the rain began to fall
\nIt was hopeless
\nThe man could not take the evil crowd with him
\nBut he was allowed to bring his good family.<\/p>\n

The rain continued through the night
\nAnd the cries of screaming men filled the air
\nThe ark was afloat
\nUntil the dove returned with the leaf
\nEvil still existed.<\/p>\n

When the rainbows reached throughout the sky
\nThe humble man and his family knew what it meant
\nThe animals ran and flew freely with their newborn
\nThe fog rose and the sun shone
\nPeace was in the air
\nAnd it soon appeared in all of man\u2019s heart<\/p>\n

He knew evil would not be kept away
\nFor evil and war could not be destroyed
\nBut neither was it possible to destroy peace
\nEvil is hard to end and peace is hard to begin
\nBut the rainbow and the dove will always live
\nWithin every man\u2019s heart<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When I interviewed Aronofsky<\/a> last month, he said he had found a copy of the poem while his film was in post-production, and he posted it in the film\u2019s editing room. \u201cIt\u2019s a little embarrassing,\u201d he said, but he and his co-writer Ari Handel noted that the poem actually kind of has \u201cthe same themes and ideas in it as the movie\u201d.<\/p>\n
