1.<\/a> The first footage from The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i> is now available here<\/a>, and it looks pretty good. Indeed, I am excited. And I am also distraught, because I know where this story is leading<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/a> The Associated Press<\/a> picks up on the news<\/a> that Disney may or may not release Song of the South<\/a><\/i> (1946; my comments<\/a>) on DVD:<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s reissue would surely spark debate, but it could also sell big. Nearly 115,000 people have signed an online petition urging Disney to make the movie available, and out-of-print international copies routinely sell online for $50-$90, some even more than $100.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3.<\/a> ComingSoon.net<\/a> reports that Don Bluth\u2019s video game Dragon\u2019s Lair<\/a><\/i> (1983) is coming to Blu-Ray on April 9.<\/p>\n

4.<\/a> Ostrov<\/a><\/i>, AKA The Island<\/i>, swept the Golden Eagle awards<\/a> in its native Russia two months ago. Now, Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that the film, about an Orthodox monastery, has won some Nika awards<\/a> too:<\/p>\n

The pic, about a Russian Orthodox monastery, won prizes for film, director, actor (Petr Mamonov), supporting actor (Viktor Sukhorukov), cinematography (Andrei Zhigalov, posthumously) and sound editing.<\/p>\n

Industry vets gave warm praise to the Nikas, which was celebrating its 20th anni. Actor-director Andrei Smirnov, presenting Lungin with the director gong, remembered the Perestroika-born event as a \u201cfirst sign of freedom in the country.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

5.<\/a> Cory Edwards<\/a> \u2014 who says he can\u2019t talk<\/a> about the fact that he did a major rewrite<\/a> on the current #1 movie in America (but not in Canada) \u2014 announced<\/a> today that Mike D\u2019Isa<\/a>, an animator on various Disney cartoons over the past dozen years, has been hired to direct the sequel to Hoodwinked!<\/a><\/i> (2005), which is currently titled Hoodwinked 2: Hood Vs. Evil<\/a><\/i>. \u201cThis guy knows more about animation than most of us on the original team,\u201d says Edwards, adding that D\u2019Isa \u201creally gets what we\u2019re trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
