{"id":16493,"date":"2014-03-30T12:02:10","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T19:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=16493"},"modified":"2014-03-30T12:02:10","modified_gmt":"2014-03-30T19:02:10","slug":"noah-has-a-big-first-weekend-but-what-do-audiences-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/noah-has-a-big-first-weekend-but-what-do-audiences-think.html","title":{"rendered":"<i>Noah<\/i> has a big first weekend, but what do audiences think?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/n-23275r.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/n-23275r-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"NOAH\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16494\"><\/a>The box-office estimates are in for this weekend, and the news on that front is very good for <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/noah-2014\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i>, and perhaps for the Bible-movie genre as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Audience reactions to the film, however, are more of a mixed bag, which could affect the film\u2019s long-term prospects.<\/p>\n<p><i>Noah<\/i> made <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2014&amp;wknd=13&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">an estimated $44 million<\/a> in the United States and Canada between Thursday night and Sunday, and it has earned another $51.1 million overseas; the film opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/box-office-update-bible-movies-and-an-evangelical-surprise.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in Mexico and South Korea<\/a> one week ago and opened in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/2014\/03\/international-box-office-noah-shipshape-in-australia-russia-openings-overseas-cume-at-22m-from-4-markets-through-thursday\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">another 20 territories<\/a> on Thursday or Friday.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is by far the best opening ever for a film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=darrenaronofsky.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">directed by Darren Aronofsky<\/a>; in fact, <i>Noah<\/i> has already outgrossed all but one of Aronofsky\u2019s previous films, the sole exception being the ballet-dancer horror movie <i>Black Swan<\/i> (2010), which topped out at $107 million in North America and another $222.4 million overseas.<\/p>\n<p>This is also the best opening ever for a film in which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=russellcrowe.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Russell Crowe<\/a> has the undisputed lead role; the only film of his that had a bigger opening is <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/man-of-steel\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Man of Steel<\/a><\/i> (2013, $116.6 million), in which he had a supporting role as Superman\u2019s father. Crowe\u2019s previous second-best opening \u2014 which might remain his second-best if <i>Noah<\/i>\u2019s actual earnings turn out to be slightly lower than the estimate \u2014 was for <i>American Gangster<\/i> (2007, $43.6 million), in which top billing went to Denzel Washington.<\/p>\n<p><i>Noah<\/i> ranks pretty high on the opening-weekend lists for several of its other stars, too. It marks the second-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=jenniferconnelly.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jennifer Connelly<\/a>, behind <i>Hulk<\/i> (2003, $62.1 million); the best opening by far for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=emmawatson.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Emma Watson<\/a> outside of the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/harry-potter\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Potter<\/a><\/i> franchise; the best opening ever for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=loganlerman.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Logan Lerman<\/a>; the fourth-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-numbers.com\/person\/153710401-Ray-Winstone#tab=acting\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ray Winstone<\/a>; and the sixth-best opening for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=anthonyhopkins.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anthony Hopkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among Bible films, <i>Noah<\/i>\u2019s North American opening ranks second only to that of <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/passion-of-the-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (2004, $83.8 million), and its first-weekend earnings are already ahead of the total amounts earned by most other Bible-themed films released since people started keeping close track of the box office about 35 years ago:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 $370.8 million \u2014 <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1998 \u2014 $101.4 million \u2014 <i>The Prince of Egypt<\/i>\n<\/li><li><b>2014 \u2014 $57.9 million \u2014 <i>Son of God<\/i><\/b>\n<\/li><li><b>2014 \u2014 $44.0 million \u2014 <i>Noah<\/i><\/b>\n<\/li><li>2009 \u2014 $43.3 million \u2014 <i>Year One<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $37.6 million \u2014 <i>The Nativity Story<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1981 \u2014 $31.7 million \u2014 <i>History of the World, Part I<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2002 \u2014 $25.6 million \u2014 <i>Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1979 \u2014 $20.0 million \u2014 <i>Monty Python\u2019s Life of Brian<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1980 \u2014 $14.2 million \u2014 <i>Wholly Moses!<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $13.4 million \u2014 <i>One Night with the King<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1988 \u2014 $8.4 million \u2014 <i>The Last Temptation of Christ<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1985 \u2014 $5.1 million \u2014 <i>King David<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2003 \u2014 $4.1 million \u2014 <i>The Gospel of John<\/i><\/li><\/ul>\n<p>The question now is what sort of \u201clegs\u201d the film will have.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-release surveys indicated that interest in the film was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/a-new-noah-clip-and-an-early-box-office-report.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">highest among older moviegoers<\/a>, who tend to take their time getting to the theatre; this indicated that the film could have some staying power at the box office in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the weekend\u2019s estimates kept rising \u2014 from $35 million or more going into the weekend, to $41 million or more on Saturday morning, to the current estimate today \u2014 could also indicate that word-of-mouth has been good.<\/p>\n<p>But audience response this weekend has been divided at best: the film got a C from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinemascore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">CinemaScore<\/a>, and a 49% audience rating (as opposed to a 76% rating from critics) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/noah_2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, so poor word-of-mouth could hit the film hard next week.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, <i>Noah<\/i> does stand a better than decent chance of grossing at least $100 million in North America by the end of its theatrical run.<\/p>\n<p>Over 200 films have had opening weekends of <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/weekends\/?pagenum=m4050&amp;sort=opengross&amp;p=.htm&amp;order=DESC\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">$40 million or more<\/a>, and only seven of those films \u2014 <i>Scary Movie 4<\/i> (2006), <i>Cloverfield<\/i> (2008), <i>High School Musical 3: Senior Year<\/i> (2008), <i>Friday the 13th<\/i> (2009), <i>Tyler Perry\u2019s Madea Goes to Jail<\/i> (2009), <i>Paranormal Activity 2<\/i> (2010), <i>Insidious Chapter 2<\/i> (2013) \u2014 failed to cross the $100 million line. And most of those films were sequels and\/or horror movies.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, no film that has opened to $44 million or more has ever grossed less than $107 million in North America when all was said and done.<\/p>\n<p>The studio, for its part, is hoping that <i>Noah<\/i> will perform more like <i>Shutter Island<\/i>. Released by Paramount in February 2010, that film opened to $41.1 million and a C+ CinemaScore and went on to gross a total of $128 million in North America (and another $166.8 million overseas) when all was said and done.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gods-not-dead\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">God\u2019s Not Dead<\/a><\/i> has continued to surprise by dropping only 1.5% in its second week. The $9.1 million it earned was enough to nab it the #5 spot for the weekend, and the film now has $22 million altogether, which makes it the third-highest-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/genres\/chart\/?id=christian.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">church-based movie<\/a> that wasn\u2019t based directly on the Bible:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2011 \u2014 $34.5 million \u2014 <i>Courageous<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2008 \u2014 $33.5 million \u2014 <i>Fireproof<\/i>\n<\/li><li><b>2014 \u2014 $22.0 million \u2014 <i>God\u2019s Not Dead<\/i><\/b>\n<\/li><li>2008 \u2014 $13.0 million \u2014 <i>The Pirates Who Don\u2019t Do Anything<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1999 \u2014 $12.6 million \u2014 <i>The Omega Code<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $12.0 million \u2014 <i>End of the Spear<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $10.2 million \u2014 <i>Facing the Giants<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2008 \u2014 $7.7 million \u2014 <i>Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2001 \u2014 $6.0 million \u2014 <i>Megiddo: The Omega Code II<\/i><\/li><\/ul>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/son-of-god\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Son of God<\/a><\/i>, meanwhile, grossed $1.1 million and took the #15 spot in this, its fifth weekend.
