He became a multimillionaire attorney, fighting for the working man against huge corporations. Pic will focus on a $500 million settlement he won for the owner of a small chain of funeral homes in Mississippi who sued a Canada-based conglom that dominates the industry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like it\u2019s about the case that drove Vancouver\u2019s Ray Loewen and\/or his Loewen Group into bankruptcy.  Perhaps it\u2019s just my geographic bias showing, but as I understand it, this case is widely seen as a travesty, as a triumph of American xenophobia over the protections that were supposed to have been built into the NAFTA agreement.  Somehow I don\u2019t expect this film to take that angle.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, both Gary and Loewen have made a point of noting their own Christian beliefs, in interviews and on websites.  It will be interesting to see if the film deals with any of that material.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/03182007\/news\/worldnews\/harrys_gal_casts_her_last_spell_worldnews_eric_lenkowitz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Post<\/a><\/i> reprinted a British tabloid item to the effect that Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/harry-potter-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter<\/a><\/i> movies, is <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/newsbites-antichrist-hermione-evan.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">still thinking<\/a> of <i>not<\/i> being in the last two films.  But now <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/entertainment\/6465875.stm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">BBC News<\/a> reports that the studio is \u201cextremely confident\u201d that Watson will stick around to see Hermione through to the end.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117961076.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/ap\/20070313\/117382494000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Associated Press<\/a> report that some Iranians are not all that happy to see their Persian ancestors depicted as decadent, depraved, imperialist bullies in Zack Snyder\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/has-300-revived-ancient-epic-genre.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">300<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Brian D. Johnson of <i>Maclean\u2019s<\/i>, as re-posted by <a href=\"http:\/\/hollywood-elsewhere.com\/archives\/2007\/03\/hitlers_spartan.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Wells<\/a> of Hollywood Elsewhere, writes that the film\u2019s depiction of the Spartan warriors\u2019 heroic \u201cmass suicide\u201d prompted him to think of \u201cfascists, suicide bombers and fundamentalists who promote the righteous beauty of marching off to a perfect death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scriptoriumdaily.com\/2007\/03\/14\/the-300-must-we-celebrate-war-to-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Mark Reynolds<\/a> at The Scriptorium writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is no surprise that the number one film in America is \u201cThe 300.\u201d The story is classic, the marketing campaign is brilliant (if annoying), the comic on which it is based is first-rate (bringing built in fan-boys), and a nation at war finally hears a full throated defense of fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood has refused to make pro-war films and there was a pent up market for a film with less angst and more courage.<\/p>\n<p>Regretfully, the story is useless as a defense of our present War (if anyone should try to use it as such) and paints a dangerous image of combat.<\/p>\n<p>The picture of warfare is pagan and not Christian. However wonderfully told, the message is seductive in its simplistic glorification of violence and not appropriate to our time. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Me, I still want to know if the conservatives who champion this movie\u2019s depiction of the Spartans also affirm the film\u2019s emphasis on the role that infanticide played in making the Spartans such a tough lot in the first place \u2014 weeding out the weak, and all that.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nypost.com\/movies\/archives\/2007\/03\/sparta_in_ancie.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kyle Smith<\/a> at the <i>New York Post<\/i> compares and contrasts <i>300<\/i> with the movie that inspired Frank Miller\u2019s graphic novel in the first place:  Rudolph Mat\u00e9\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0001NBMDK\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The 300 Spartans<\/a><\/i> (1962).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> Speaking of <i>300<\/i>, it looks like that remake of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/newsbites-plissken-becket-commandments.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Escape from New York<\/a><\/i> (1981) starring Gerard Butler is really going to happen \u2014 <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117961252.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that New Line has snapped it up.  The script will be written by Ken Nolan, who also wrote <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/newsbites-winter-howard-jihadists-opus.html#3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Black Hawk Down<\/a><\/i> (2001; <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20060523203717\/http:\/\/www.vancourier.com\/issues02\/014202\/entertainment\/014202en2.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my review<\/a>).  One of the companies producing this remake, by the way, is called Original Films, which is a wee bit ironic.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/newsbites-da-vinci-penguins-becket.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Happy Feet<\/a><\/i> director George Miller tells the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/heraldsun\/story\/0,21985,21380655-5006023,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Herald Sun<\/a><\/i> that he still wants to make <i>Mad Max 4<\/i>, but if he does so, it will be without Mel Gibson, who is now \u201ctoo old and focused on his own films . . . Instead, Miller hopes to secure a rising young star for the role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">6.<\/a> The sequel to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/fun-with-advertising-superman-and-r2-d2.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Superman Returns<\/a><\/i> is on hold while Bryan Singer develops <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117961116.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a World War II thriller<\/a> for United Artists.  Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviehole.net\/news\/20070319_exclusive_superman_wont_go_it.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Moviehole.net<\/a> says Warner Brothers is thinking of subsuming the <i>Superman<\/i> franchise into that <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/justice-league-ready-for-its-close-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Justice League<\/a><\/i> movie that is currently in development.  Does this mean Singer\u2019s film \u2014 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/superman-ii-richard-donner-cut.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Richard Donner<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/superman-ii-quarter-century-later.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Richard Lester films<\/a> that were incorporated into it \u2014 will be part of the <i>Justice League<\/i> movie\u2019s back-story?  Like, e.g., will Superman still have a son by Lois Lane?<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117961455.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> disputes the rumour, but completely ignores the <i>Justice League<\/i> part of the story, and thus misses the point.  \u201cOne thing is for sure, though: Superman isn\u2019t flying off the Warners lot,\u201d writes Pamela McClintock.  Well, sure, but will he return as a solo superhero, or as part of a larger team?  <i>That\u2019s<\/i> the question.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">7.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/jimhillmedia.com\/blogs\/jim_hill\/archive\/2007\/03\/09\/davis-derails-disney-annual-shareholder-meeting.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim Hill<\/a> reports from Disney\u2019s annual shareholders\u2019 meeting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The only other news that might interest all you hardcore Disneyana fans out there is that the company is now revisiting its decision not to release \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.songofthesouth.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Song of the South<\/a>\u201d on DVD. When quizzed by Carol Koster about the current status of this 1946 Walt Disney Productions release, Iger first expressed his concerns about the film. Wondering aloud if it would actually be possible for today\u2019s audiences to put this picture in the proper context.<\/p>\n<p>But Bob (while making no promises about what might happen next with this historic motion picture) then went on to say that \u201d \u2026 we will look at (\u201cSong of the South\u201d) again. And <a href=\"http:\/\/corporate.disney.go.com\/corporate\/bios\/richard_cook.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dick Cook<\/a> (I.E. The Chairman of Walt Disney Studios) would be in charge of that effort.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>FWIW, I\u2019ve got a bootleg copy of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0038969\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Song of the South<\/a><\/i> (1946; <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/group\/onfilm\/message\/7252\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my comments<\/a>), and I can\u2019t imagine for the life of me why it has never been released on video on this continent.
