<i>Variety<\/i> magazine seems to think that that is a possibility \u2014 and at least one of the filmmakers leading the charge just happens to be a Christian.<\/p>\n<p>The trade paper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118009456.html?categoryid=1236&amp;cs=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">reports<\/a> that Scott Derrickson, who has discussed his faith and filmmaking with CT Movies a <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/scott-derrickson-interview.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">couple<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/day-earth-stood-still-articles-are-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">times<\/a>, has signed on to direct a remake of the Danish grade-school thriller <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0478394\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Substitute<\/a><\/i> for Spooky Pictures, a brand-new outfit set up by Sam Raimi and Columbia Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Derrickson has plenty of experience as a maker of horror movies for grown-ups \u2014 among other things, he directed the R-rated <i>Hellraiser: Inferno<\/i> and the PG-13 <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/newsbites-science-fiction-edition.html#4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Exorcism of Emily Rose<\/a><\/i> (which is also available on DVD in an \u201cunrated\u201d edition) \u2014 but this new venture, according to <i>Variety<\/i>, is aimed at \u201cfamily audiences\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Substitute<\/i> itself will concern \u201ca terrified sixth-grade class as the students race to reveal to their parents that their new substitute teacher is an evil alien being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Variety<\/i> notes that Spooky Pictures is not the first family-oriented scary-movie brand to be created in recent months. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118008467.html?categoryid=13&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2562\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Three weeks ago<\/a>, the Disney studio announced that it had struck a deal with horror maestro Guillermo Del Toro (<i>Pan\u2019s Labyrinth<\/i>, etc.) to create \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/hollywood\/disney-toons-up-with-guillermo-del-toro-under-new-thrill-label-called-disney-double-dare-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Disney Double Dare You<\/a>\u2018, a new production label that will make \u201canimated films full of chills and thrills for audiences of all ages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><i>Variety<\/i> writer Marc Graser writes that the rise of these labels \u201csignals the kind of thrillers Hollywood may soon be unspooling at the megaplex,\u201d and speculates: \u201cShould the labels find an audience, the shift away from slasher fare and the like, often referred to as \u2018gore porn,\u2019 is likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derrickson, for his part, has a number of other projects in development at the moment, including adaptations of John Milton\u2019s epic poem <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/paradise-lost-and-sympathy-for-devil.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Paradise Lost<\/a><\/i> and Dan Simmons\u2019s Hugo-winning sci-fi novel <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/scott-derrickson-to-direct-hyperion.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hyperion Cantos<\/a><\/i>; it remains to be seen which of these movies will get the green light first.
