I agree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But that reminds me, I should probably update a post that I made here <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/oscar-winners-slipping-at-box-office.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">last year<\/a>, which marked the first time since 1985 that not one of the Best Picture nominees grossed over $100 million either before or after their nominations, and possibly the first time <i>ever<\/i> that the winner was not one of the top 25 films at the domestic box office.  (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-cars-crash-bashing-id-trial.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Crash<\/a><\/i> actually ranks way down at 49th for 2005.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/oscar\/chart\/?yr=2006&amp;view=fulldetail&amp;catid=1&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">This year<\/a>, the only Best Picture nominee that is anywhere near as popular as the winners of old is <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/gibson-turns-down-scorsese-role-again.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Departed<\/a><\/i>, which has made over $131 million so far and ranks 15th for the year.  After that:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/newsbites-compass-blood-potter.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Little Miss Sunshine<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $59,763,253 \u2014 52nd<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/bleep-save-our-gracious-queen.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Queen<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $51,618,000 \u2014 62nd<\/li>\n<li><i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/newsbites-departed-babel-burning.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Babel<\/a><\/i> \u2014 $33,312,919 \u2014 93rd<\/li>\n<li><i>Letters from Iwo Jima<\/i> \u2014 $12,013,291 \u2014 146th<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Of course, these totals can and will change, and the rankings of the various films will no doubt slide up a bit.  <i>The Queen<\/i> and <i>Babel<\/i> have both experienced a post-nomination surge \u2014 indeed, despite coming out months ago, they have made almost a third of their grosses in just the last few weeks \u2014 and <i>Letters from Iwo Jima<\/i> did not go into wide release until <i>after<\/i> it had been nominated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ah well, whatever else happens, it seems certain that 2006 will mark the first time in three years that the Best Picture winner was not outgrossed by a documentary \u2014 assuming we don\u2019t count the semi-fictitious <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/borat-about-those-consent-forms.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan<\/a><\/i> as a \u201cdocumentary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>(In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?yr=2004&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">2004<\/a>, the un-nominated <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/mel-and-michael-together-almost.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fahrenheit 9\/11<\/a><\/i> outgrossed <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/kingdom-of-barbarians.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Million Dollar Baby<\/a><\/i>; and in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?yr=2005&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2005<\/a>, Best Documentary winner <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/morality-of-penguins-redux.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">March of the Penguins<\/a><\/i> outgrossed <i>Crash<\/i>;
