{"id":1705,"date":"2007-02-18T23:25:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-18T23:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/02\/the-hobbit-no-script-coming-soon-anyway\/"},"modified":"2007-02-18T23:25:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-18T23:25:00","slug":"the-hobbit-no-script-coming-soon-anyway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2007\/02\/the-hobbit-no-script-coming-soon-anyway.html","title":{"rendered":"The Hobbit &#8212; no script, coming soon anyway?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">From the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/02\/19\/business\/media\/19new.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">New York Times<\/a><\/i>\u2018s current profile of New Line Cinema chief <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/and-now-look-back-at-happier-times.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Robert Shaye<\/a> and his studio\u2019s \u201cidentity crisis\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p> One thing that has not been blunted by illness is Mr. Shaye\u2019s temper, which flared last year when <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/new-line-cinema-blacklists-peter.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he was asked<\/a> about a lawsuit filed by Mr. Jackson over profits from \u201cThe Lord of the Rings.\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the remarks last week, Mr. Shaye said that he made the statement \u201cin a moment of emotion\u201d but did not regret it. \u201cI regret losing a friend,\u201d he said, as he showed a visitor a Gandalf sword that Mr. Jackson had sent him as a gift, before the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>A representative for Mr. Jackson declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>But the ill will has held up plans to make \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/inklings-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hobbit<\/a>.\u201d Without specifically saying he would not make the film with Mr. Jackson, Mr. Shaye made it plain that he had no interest in working with difficult filmmakers. \u201cSome directors are impossible,\u201d he said. \u201cAre there a few people I wouldn\u2019t work with? Yes, but I won\u2019t name names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he would not comment on reports in the news media that the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/churches-and-forgiveness-in-spider-man.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Spider-Man<\/a>\u201d director Sam Raimi had been asked to direct \u201cThe Hobbit.\u201d He said, however, that although there was no workable script yet for the film, he intended to release it in 2009.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Based on earlier comments by <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/jackson-will-definitely-direct-hobbit.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Saul Zaentz<\/a>, I\u2019m going to assume that that\u2019s the latest possible release date New Line could hope for.
