And along the way, he repeated a claim that I and others have made in the film\u2019s defense \u2014 a claim that, I\u2019m afraid, might have been mistaken.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Here\u2019s the timeline, as best as I can piece it together:<\/p>\n<p><b>February 27:<\/b> While watching the film, I scribble the following in my notes: \u201cHam: \u2018My father says there can be no king. The Creator is God.'\u201d I draw a squiggly line beneath the last few words to signify that I\u2019m not 100% sure about that bit; I often do this as my fingers race to catch up with a line as my memory of it begins to fade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/04\/noah-notes.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/04\/noah-notes-1024x118.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"noah-notes\" width=\"590\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-17163\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>March 21:<\/b> The controversy begins, and I respond on Twitter. I am immediately backed up by my friend Steven D. Greydanus, who jotted the same sentence down in his own notes when he saw the film a week or so after I did:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ptchat\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@ptchat<\/a> \"My father says there can be no king. The Creator is God.\" Word for word what I have in my notes. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/THR\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@THR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bighollywood\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@bighollywood<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ToddMcCarthy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">@ToddMcCarthy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Steven D. Greydanus (@DecentFilms) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DecentFilms\/statuses\/447221147772649472\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">March 22, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><b>March 23:<\/b> Emboldened by Steve\u2019s back-up, I devote an entire blog post to the controversy, titled \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/is-god-missing-from-darren-aronofskys-noah-please.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Is \u201cGod\u201d missing from Darren Aronofsky\u2019s Noah? Please.<\/a>\u2019 In that post, I list six different reasons why the controversy is a silly one, of which my recollection that the film <i>does<\/i> mention the word \u201cGod\u201d is just one.<\/p>\n<p><b>March 26:<\/b> I see the film a second time, and I notice what seems to be an extra word or syllable in that line of dialogue. I wonder if Ham might actually be saying, \u201cMy father says there can be no king, <i>and<\/i> the Creator is God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>March 27:<\/b> Steve addresses the controversy himself in a post at the <i>National Catholic Register<\/i>, titled \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/noah-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The \u2018Noah\u2019 Movie Controversies: Questions and Answers<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>March 28:<\/b> NBC News runs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/movies\/animals-arks-how-noah-movie-compares-bible-n63926\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a story on the film<\/a> that quotes Steve on this subject (and links to one of my blog posts on a separate issue related to the movie):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Is the word God missing from the film as some critics have charged?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>No, says Greydanus. \u201cFor the most part, God is referred to in the film as \u2018the Creator\u2019 and this is a creative choice that I think does a lot for the film. It helps to defamiliarize the language somewhat, it makes the figure of God a little more mysterious to us.\u201d But His name is clearly spoken when Ham, second son of Noah, says to Tubal-cain: \u201cMy father says there can be no king. The Creator is God.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>March 29:<\/b> I begin to hear from people who saw the film and heard Ham say, \u201cMy father says there can be no king <i>in the Creator\u2019s garden<\/i>.\u201d It occurs to me that this would fit perfectly with an essay that Aronofsky wrote two days earlier on the theme of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/darren-aronofsky-on-dominion-vs-stewardship.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">dominion vs. stewardship<\/a> in the Genesis story, and in his film. I update my post to allow for the possibility that this might be the actual line of dialogue.<\/p>\n<p><b>April 8:<\/b> Jon Stewart addresses the controversy on <i>The Daily Show<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/watch.thecomedynetwork.ca\/#clip1079298\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canadian link<\/a>), and quotes Steve\u2019s quote from the NBC News story along the way:<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color:#000000;width:520px;\">\n<div style=\"padding:4px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/media.mtvnservices.com\/embed\/mgid:arc:video:thedailyshow.com:3b99ebe2-a6d6-406f-b66a-25e3c0e2bf7c\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>By now however, Steve, who saw the film again over the weekend, has come to believe that \u201cin the Creator\u2019s garden\u201d is the more accurate rendition of the line in question, and he has updated his post at the <i>National Catholic Register<\/i> accordingly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Correction:<\/b> This article originally stated that while God is usually called \u201cthe Creator,\u201d \u201cthe Creator actually is referred to as \u2018God\u2019 at least once, when Ham tells Tubal-cain, \u2018My father says there can be no king; the Creator is God.\u2019\u201d That\u2019s how I and a number of others heard the line in question in screenings while sound levels were still being tweaked; however, after watching <i>Noah<\/i> again recently, I now believe we misheard the line. The correct line, I believe, is \u201cMy father says there can be no king <i>in the Creator\u2019s garden<\/i>.\u201d I regret this error, though the larger point remains that there are good reasons for the film\u2019s usage of \u201cthe Creator,\u201d and the whole controversy is a silly one. \u2014SDG<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given how the opposition of \u201cking\u201d with \u201cthe Creator\u2019s garden\u201d fits so well with the theme of \u201cdominion\u201d versus \u201cstewardship\u201d, I am inclined to believe that Steve and the others who have heard \u201cin the Creator\u2019s garden\u201d are correct. But I will definitely be watching this scene with the subtitles on when the DVD comes out. (I suppose I could also track down a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/noah-news-round-up-novelizations-ratings-and-more.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the novelization<\/a> and see what it says in there.)<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the fact remains that the controversy here is utterly silly, for all the <i>other<\/i> reasons that Jon and Steve and I have articulated. In a period piece like this where the characters say a woman is \u201cwith child\u201d rather than \u201cpregnant\u201d, it only makes sense that they would use similarly different terms for God, etc., than we do.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b> John Snowden, the film\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/02\/noah-the-biblical-advisor-speaks-and-new-photos.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">biblical advisor<\/a>, confirms that Ham says \u201cgarden\u201d rather than \u201cGod\u201d.
