Yet another unofficial sequel to The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> (2004) is in the works. Variety<\/a><\/i> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n

German producer Roland Pellegrino<\/a>, who financed the \u201cThe Red Baron,\u201d is leaping from the aerial battles of World War I to the streets of ancient Rome.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s teaming with Canadian duo Jakob de Boer and Bess Fotopoulus to bring the life of Jesus\u2019 most influential disciple to the big screen.<\/p>\n

The English-language \u201cThe Sword of Peter\u201d tells the story of the Galilean fisherman who founded the Christian church in Rome. The film explores the early days of Christianity under the reign of Emperor Nero and the burning of Rome in 64 A.D.<\/p>\n

Billed as \u201cGladiator<\/a>\u201d meets \u201cThe Passion of the Christ,\u201d pic is produced by de Boer and Fotopoulus\u2019 Toronto-based FOS with de Boer set to direct from his own script.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Sword of Peter\u201d is budgeted at $40 million and will shoot in Italy and Israel. The producers are looking to finance the film by way of Canadian subsidies, international presales and private equity from Germany. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The IMDB doesn\u2019t seem to have the names \u201cJakob de Boer\u201d and \u201cBess Fotopoulus\u201d in its archives, at least not with those spellings, but after snooping around a bit, I discovered that these people seem to have been involved in one of the various incarnations of The Visual Bible<\/a>. In September 2000, Variety<\/i> reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n

John Hamilton, CEO of Visual Bible, said the director Jakob Deboeris now in Morocco scouting locations for the next three films: \u201cMark,\u201d \u201cLuke\u201d and \u201cJohn,\u201d which he will film simultaneously. . . .<\/p>\n

The financing of the movies is coming from the Canadian investment underwriters Dominick and Dominick and the debt-financing company Trinity Capital, said Bess Fotopoulos, president and chief operating officer of Visual Bible. She\u2019s still negotiating with an unidentified Canadian bank for additional production dollars.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As it turned out, the Visual Bible versions of Mark<\/i> and Luke<\/i> were never made, and The Gospel of John<\/a><\/i> (2003; my review<\/a>) was directed in the end by someone named Philip Saville.
