But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/nationalpost\/news\/artslife\/postmovies\/story.html?id=7f0f5a5d-32a7-4893-b15d-817b2f5c2d73\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this piece<\/a> by Jamie Portman of CanWest News Service is worth citing here, if only to fact-check a couple of statements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First, a small and rather trivial matter of box-office statistics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Prince Caspian is the second of Christian academic C.S. Lewis\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/inklings-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chronicles of Narnia<\/a> to be filmed, and Disney is promising a movie even more spectacular than the one that grossed US$742-million worldwide, making it the studio\u2019s most successful live-action film ever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That may have been true a year ago, but <i>Narnia<\/i> was easily beat last summer by <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/morality-or-not-of-pirates-and-scott.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man\u2019s Chest<\/a><\/i>, which is one of only three films <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ever<\/a> to gross over $1 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the identification of my colleague\u2019s church affiliation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The cast [of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/newsbites-knife-hoodwinked-ratatouille.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Golden Compass<\/a><\/i>] also includes Nicole Kidman in a piece of controversial casting as the villainous Mrs. Coulter, the woman who joins forces with a demon monkey to conduct the experiments on behalf of the sinister \u201cGeneral Oblation Board.\u201d Pullman\u2019s use of the world \u201coblation\u201d is like a red flag to Roman Catholic groups because the term defines the offering of bread and wine during mass. Catholic film critic Jeffrey Overstreet, was appalled that Kidman had signed for such a project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/catholic-kidman-to-star-in-anti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nicole Kidman<\/a>, who identifies herself as a Catholic, participate in a fantasy that goes out of its way to declare her own faith as a heap of lies?\u201d Overstreet asked. \u201cThe saga doesn\u2019t stop there \u2014 it restages Adam and Eve\u2019s fall as a triumph of the human spirit and depicts God as somebody who needs to be overthrown.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fairness, Portman seems to have pinched this last quote from an article that appeared in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/observer.guardian.co.uk\/7days\/story\/0,,1843498,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Observer<\/a><\/i> six months ago \u2014 and they, in turn, took the quote from <a href=\"http:\/\/lookingcloser.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/what-do-paul-bettany-and-nicole-kidman.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this post<\/a> at Jeffrey\u2019s blog.
