Now, the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/article\/176167\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Toronto Star<\/a><\/i> reports that Canadian exhibitors are asking the government to prevent this by making a change to our Criminal Code:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last week, Canada\u2019s movie theatre owners sent a letter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/en\/mag\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Justice Minister<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rob_Nicholson\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rob Nicholson<\/a> seeking an amendment to the code that would make it a crime to record a movie in a theatre \u2013 the act of filming is not allowed, but it\u2019s not currently a criminal offence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to be a lack of understanding as to the severity of the situation. \u2026 We think (Nicholson) has to get up to speed on this quickly,\u201d said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/cineplex-buys-famous-players.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cineplex Entertainment<\/a>, the country\u2019s largest movie theatre chain.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob was also speaking as a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mptac.ca\/english\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canadian Motion Picture Theatre Associations<\/a>, which first raised the piracy problem in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that could have a lot of effects. The biggest loss is probably to the consumer. \u2026 If people don\u2019t come to the movies it hurts our bottom line,\u201d said Jacob, adding that \u201cthis could eventually destroy the industry in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Nicholson, who was appointed minister this month, declined to comment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, in unrelated (?) news, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117958210.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Konrad von Finckenstein, the judge who in 2004 dealt a severe blow to the Canadian music industry when he ruled that uploading and downloading music on the Internet is not copyright infringement, is the new chairman of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/NEWS\/RELEASES\/2007\/i070126.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canada\u2019s broadcast regulator<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I haven\u2019t a clue whether that implies anything about the current government\u2019s openness to enhancing our anti-piracy laws.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has been almost three weeks since I first passed on the news that 20th Century Fox was thinking of withholding its films from Canada because of all the rampant piracy here.
