You may recall that, three months ago, I was rather critical of the trailer<\/a> for the upcoming film adaptation of Bridge to Terabithia<\/a><\/i>. Turns out I wasn\u2019t alone \u2014 but it also turns out the movie might be better than the trailer leads us to expect. A few days ago I interviewed Katherine Paterson<\/a>, author of the Newbery-winning book on which the film is based, and we had this brief exchange:<\/span><\/p>\n

PTC:<\/b> One of the first things I heard about the Terabithia<\/i> movie, about a year ago, was that it was going to be a \u201csprawling fantasy adventure\u201d, and they had hired a big special effects team for it, and my initial reaction was to sort of recoil at this\u2013<\/p>\n

KP:<\/b> Your<\/i> initial reaction? (laughs)<\/i> What do you think mine<\/i> was?<\/p>\n

PTC:<\/b> I don\u2019t know, you tell me!<\/p>\n

KP:<\/b> Well that was the thing I was most afraid of, that they would\u2013 And if you\u2019ve seen the trailer, my word. I\u2019m just telling everybody I know, \u201cDon\u2019t see the trailer, don\u2019t see the trailer.\u201d Because it\u2019s exactly what the trailer ends up making you think, is that it\u2019s this glorified fantasy adventure with nothing but special effects, and that\u2019s not what we ended up with in this movie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s more to this interview, and it will be published online at some point before the movie\u2019s February 16 release date \u2014 but since I made such a fuss over the trailer here, I figured I should do my part now to discourage<\/i> people from watching it. I\u2019m still a bit apprehensive about this movie, but less than I was before.<\/p>\n
