The nominations<\/a> for this year\u2019s Genie Awards<\/a> came out yesterday, and surprise, surprise, four out of the five Best Motion Picture nominees are from Quebec.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is interesting to see how this list matches \u2014 or doesn\u2019t \u2014 the top ten list<\/a> that was issued last month by the team that runs the Toronto film festival. Only two of this year\u2019s Best Picture nominees were on that list, namely Un dimanche \u00e0 Kigali<\/a><\/i> and Trailer Park Boys: The Movie<\/a><\/i> \u2014 though another \u201ctop ten\u201d film, Manufactured Landscapes<\/a><\/i>, has a Genie nomination for Best Documentary.<\/p>\n

Two of the other \u201ctop ten\u201d films have been nominated in other categories, namely Congorama<\/a><\/i> (actor, screenplay, editing) and The Journals of Knud Rasmussen<\/a><\/i> (costume design). But there were no nominations at all for Away From Her<\/i>, Monkey Warfare<\/i>, Radiant City<\/i>, Sharkwater<\/i> or Sur La Trace D\u2019Igor Rizzi<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Leading the pack with 13 nominations is \u2014 what else? \u2014 a biopic about a hockey player, which is called Maurice Richard<\/a><\/i> in French and The Rocket<\/a><\/i> in English. The other nominated films are:<\/p>\n

  2. Un dimanche \u00e0 Kigali<\/i> AKA A Sunday in Kigali<\/i>, with 7 noms; <\/li>\n
  3. Tideland<\/i>, with 6 noms; <\/li>\n
  4. Eve and the Fire Horse<\/a><\/i>, with 5 noms; <\/li>\n
  5. La Vie secr\u00e8te des gens heureux<\/i> AKA The Secret Life of Happy People<\/i>, with 5 noms; <\/li>\n
  6. Cheech<\/i>, with 4 noms; <\/li>\n
  7. Guide de la Petite Vengeance<\/i> AKA The Little Book of Revenge<\/i>, with 4 noms; <\/li>\n
  8. Snow Cake<\/i>, with 4 noms in 3 categories; <\/li>\n
  9. Beowulf & Grendel<\/a><\/i>, with 3 noms; <\/li>\n
  10. Trailer Park Boys: The Movie<\/i>, with 3 noms; <\/li>\n
  11. La Rage de l\u2019ange<\/i> AKA Angel\u2019s Rage<\/i>, with 2 noms; <\/li>\n
