Over at his blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/lookingcloser.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/for-record.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey Overstreet<\/a> notes one such occurence:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"entry-body\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"item-body\">\n<div>When I turned in my review of <strong><em>Children of Men<\/em><\/strong>, one of the closing paragraphs went like this:\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#006600\">This Christmas, you\u2019re <span style=\"color:#000066\">unlikely to find any film<\/span>  that gives you a better sense of the pressure Mary and Joseph must have  experienced, the dangers they dodged, the responsibility they accepted,  and the hope that their child brought to the world. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice that someone made a rather severe edit in what was published:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color:#006600\">This Christmas, <span style=\"color:#000066\">there\u2019s more than one film<\/span>  that gives you a sense of the pressure Mary and Joseph must have  experienced, the dangers they dodged, the responsibility they accepted,  and the hope that their child brought to the world.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(I\u2019ve highlighted the change in blue.)<\/p>\n<p>I hate to have to point this out, but this edit isn\u2019t about fixing an error. It changes my point entirely.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m just sayin\u2019\u2026 those aren\u2019t my words, and it isn\u2019t my opinion.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Nativity Story <\/em>did  NOT give me a good sense of the pressures, dangers, and dread Mary and  Joseph must have experienced. The film moved too fast, and by  downplaying the slaughter of the innocents in order to get a  family-friendly rating (a decision I applaud, by the way, because I\u2019m  glad families can attend the film), it took away much of the burden they  must have felt watching a whole generation of boys killed off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Children of Men<\/em>,  on the other hand, doesn\u2019t abbreviate its depiction of a violent world,  a place so volcanic with bloodshed that the fragility of a baby\u2019s life  is accentuated. We come to care so intently about that baby\u2019s survival  because of the film\u2019s intense darkness.<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m sure <em>The Nativity Story <\/em>will  be a blessing to many viewers, there is one thing it does not  communicate very powerfully: the effect of Herod\u2019s violence on the  people in his kingdom.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes CT Movies editor Mark Moring can\u2019t help imposing his opinions on other people\u2019s articles.
