Among other things, she writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I am not a compulsively politically correct type who sees the Maya as the epitome of goodness and light. I know the Maya practiced brutal violence upon one another, and I have studied child sacrifice during the Classic period. But in \u201cApocalypto,\u201d no mention is made of the achievements in science and art, the profound spirituality and connection to agricultural cycles, or the engineering feats of Maya cities. Instead, <span>Gibson replays, in glorious big-budget technicolor, an offensive and racist notion that Maya people were brutal to one another long before the arrival of Europeans and thus they deserve, in fact<\/span> they <span>needed, rescue<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20061206\/116546847500.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> reports that real-life Mayans are offended by what they have seen in the trailers for this film \u2014 and get this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<span>Gibson replays, in glorious big budget Technicolor, an offensive and racist notion that Maya people were brutal to one another long before the arrival of Europeans and thus they deserve<\/span>d<span>, in fact, needed, rescue<\/span>,\u201d said Ignacio Ochoa, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nahualinstitute.com\/28301.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nahual Foundation<\/a> that promotes Mayan culture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems to me that either Ochoa plagiarized the <i>Archaeology<\/i> magazine website, or he quoted a passage from Arden\u2019s article and the Reuters reporter failed to attribute it correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, I think Arden\u2019s interpretation of the film is wrong on this point, but I won\u2019t say why until after the film comes out.<\/p>\n<p>DEC 11 UPDATE:  Interestingly, a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/entertainment\/6216414.stm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">BBC News<\/a> article on the hubbub posted last Friday cites <i>both<\/i> Reuters <i>and<\/i> Traci Arden\u2019s article.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, this is weird.
