UPDATE: Jeffrey Wells<\/a> says New Line Cinema dumping Peter Jackson \u201cis a reflection of the this year\u2019s sea-change attitude<\/b> among distributors and producers towards coddled, overpaid wunderkind types like Jackson<\/b> \u2014 big-name talents who get rich deals for themselves and their production companies, after which they go off and strain or exceed the budget, and then their sometimes indulgent, overlong film (i.e., King Kong<\/a><\/i>) comes out and does moderately well but not well enough. Result: the wunderkind makes out like a bandit and the studio is left holding the bag.\u201d I think Wells definitely has a point, here.<\/p>\n

That said, I also appreciate some of David Poland<\/a>\u2018s points, especially: \u201cGetting any of the actors who are loyal to Jackson and Walsh will be almost impossible.\u201d And it would<\/i> be a shame, to see anyone other than Ian McKellen play Gandalf, etc., etc.<\/p>\n

UPPERDATE: Variety<\/a><\/i> observes that New Line, which has production rights to The Hobbit<\/i>, has made \u201ca loud statement to both MGM\u201d \u2014 which has distribution rights and has recently<\/a> been playing up<\/a> its desire to make the film with Jackson \u2014 \u201cand Jackson that the studio is in the driver\u2019s seat when it comes to \u2018The Hobbit.'\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
