From a Variety<\/a><\/i> report on MGM\u2019s new business plans, comes this tidbit on the previously announced Hobbit<\/a><\/i> movies:<\/span><\/p>\n

As for \u201cThe Hobbit,\u201d Sloan confirmed that MGM was in advanced talks with Peter Jackson to make two movies based on JRR Tolkein\u2019s \u201cprequel\u201d to \u201cThe Lord of the Rings.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first would be a direct adaptation of \u201cThe Hobbit,\u201d and the second would be drawn from \u201cfootnotes and source material connecting \u2018The Hobbit\u2019 with \u2018Lord of the Rings,\u2019 \u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Sloan did not reveal when these projects might be ready to start shoot-ing. An MGM spokesman emphasized that negotiations with Jackson are still in progress, and that production isn\u2019t likely until 2008 or even 2009.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have expressed concerns<\/a> here before about whether a Jackson- directed adaptation of The Hobbit<\/i> could be faithful, tonally, to Tolkien\u2019s book; The Hobbit<\/i> is more of a children\u2019s book, while The Lord of the Rings<\/i> is more of a grown-up book. But this approach could work, I think; the second film could help the story segue from the relatively innocent tone of the earlier adventure to the much darker, indeed apocalyptic, tone of the later adventure.<\/p>\n

The question is, what sort of narrative<\/i> shape would it take?<\/p>\n

Oh, and nitpick here: A \u201cprequel\u201d is a sequel that takes place before an already existing story. So while Jackson\u2019s film version of The Hobbit<\/i> would certainly be a prequel to his version of The Lord of the Rings<\/i> (2001-2003), Tolkien\u2019s book version of The Hobbit<\/i> would not<\/i> be a prequel to his<\/i> version of The Lord of the Rings<\/i>, because The Hobbit<\/i> was written and published first<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
