Casino!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">I\u2019ve been stockpiling some of these items while working on other stuff, and it\u2019s time to set them free!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1.<\/a> As of Tuesday, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/former-film-critic-falls-into-full.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Departed<\/a><\/i> has passed <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/03\/illusory-orson-welles.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Aviator<\/a><\/i> (2004) to become the top-grossing film of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=martinscorsese.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>\u2018s entire career, with $103.3 million to date \u2014 and it\u2019s still in the weekly top five!<\/p>\n<p><i>The Departed<\/i> currently ranks third in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=leonardodicaprio.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>\u2018s filmography, behind <i>Catch Me If You Can<\/i> (2002; $164.6 million) and <i>Titanic<\/i> (1997; $600.8 million); and it will soon rank third on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=markwahlberg.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Wahlberg<\/a>\u2018s filmography, behind <i>Planet of the Apes<\/i> (2001; $180 million) and <i>The Perfect Storm<\/i> (2000; $182.6 million).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=mattdamon.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matt Damon<\/a> currently has six films on his list that have had higher grosses \u2014 though he was just one among many co-stars in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/04\/critiquing-private-ryan.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Saving Private Ryan<\/a><\/i> (1998; $216.5 million) and the first two <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-devils-miner-gnomeo-will-9.html#6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ocean\u2019s<\/a><\/i> movies (2001-2004; $183.4-$125.5 million).  Also ahead of <i>The Departed<\/i> are <i>Good Will Hunting<\/i> (1997; $138.4 million) and the first two <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/will-bernal-issue-bourne-his-ultimatum.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bourne<\/a><\/i> movies (2002-2004; $121.7-$176.2 million).<\/p>\n<p>It looks like the only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=alecbaldwin.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alec Baldwin<\/a> films that will stay ahead of this one are <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/six-degrees-of-cs-lewis-and-ayn-rand.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pearl Harbor<\/a><\/i> (1998; $198.5 million) and perhaps <i>The Hunt for Red October<\/i> (1990; $122 million).<\/p>\n<p>And as for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=jacknicholson.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jack Nicholson<\/a> \u2026 heck, the guy\u2019s been around for ages, and if <i>One Flew over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/i> (1975) and <i>Terms of Endearment<\/i> (1983) both made just over $108 million in their day \u2014 thus, I assume, putting each film easily among the top two or three earners of their respective years (the only 1983 film that did better than <i>Terms of Endearment<\/i> was <i>Return of the Jedi<\/i>) \u2014 does it really compare to a film making $100 million in <i>this<\/i> day and age?  His personal best remains <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/thats-my-city-doubling-for-gotham-sort.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Batman<\/a><\/i> (1989; $251.2 million).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> My friend and colleague Jeffrey Overstreet interviews <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0449467\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Babel<\/a><\/i> director Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/movies\/interviews\/alejandroinnaritu.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">CT Movies<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>The title of the film is a reference to a story in the Book of Genesis, when God punished human pride by confusing our languages. Did you mean for the film to suggest anything about our relationship with God?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u00f1\u00e1rritu: For me, <i>Babel<\/i> is about human beings left alone with each other. There\u2019s an absence of God. In a way, we have been dealing with the consequences of our own greed, our own selfishness. We punish ourselves with the way we act [toward each other.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s interesting, but is that really the implicit message of the story of the Tower of Babel itself \u2014 that we did this to ourselves?  Consider this bit from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/vancouversun\/news\/arts\/story.html?id=6d5d35dc-0b22-4582-88de-22db796190ab\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Katherine Monk\u2019s review<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Inarritu gets marks for making a film laced with a sense of urgency, and pointing out our cultural communication gaps, but the biggest point of all is ignored altogether, and that\u2019s God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis tells us God scattered his children, and broke our speech, so that we could not achieve great things together. Inarritu owed it to his film to implicate God somewhere in the mix, but he steers clear completely, making for an interesting intellectual exercise, but one that feels too shallow and manipulated to make a deep impact.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/comingsoon.net\/news\/movienews.php?id=17424\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ComingSoon.net<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinematical.com\/2006\/11\/08\/judd-to-make-a-burning-adaptation\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cinematical<\/a> report that Ashley Judd has bought the rights to \u2014 and plans to write the screenplay adaptation of \u2014 <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/193363300X\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Burning Time<\/a><\/i>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robinmorgan.us\/robin_morgan_bookDetails.asp?ProductID=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Robin Morgan<\/a> novel about a 14th-century Irish priestess named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alice_Kyteler\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alyce Kyteler<\/a>, who was one of the first people to be accused of witchcraft by the Inquisition.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodnorthreport.com\/article.php?Article=3779\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood North Report<\/a> says real dead bodies \u2014 in the form of one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceworld.bc.ca\/bodyworlds\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Body Worlds<\/a> exhibits curated by Gunther von Hagens \u2014 will form part of the backdrop to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/newsbites-horsemen-franklyn-casino.html#3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Casino Royale<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BODY WORLDS is the setting for an archetypal battle of good and evil, between Agent 007 and one of the villains of the film.
