They turned Monty Python and the Holy Grail<\/a><\/i> (1975) into a Broadway musical<\/a>, so why not turn Life of Brian<\/a><\/i> (1979; my comments<\/a>) \u2014 one of my official ten favorite movies<\/a> of all time \u2014 into an oratorio? According to yesterday\u2019s Playbill<\/a><\/i>, Eric Idle and John du Prez will premiere the 50-minute oratorio Not the Messiah<\/i> at the Luminato<\/a> festival in Toronto next June:<\/span><\/p>\n

The world premiere of \u201cNot the Messiah\u201d will be conducted by TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian (who happens to be Idle\u2019s cousin). The work \u2014 which Idle states \u201cwill be funnier than Handel, though not as good\u201d \u2014 is to be performed by a narrator, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with guest soloists and choir. . . .<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure people would allow \u2018The Life of Brian\u2019 on stage today,\u201d Idle previously told Playbill.com (Jan. 2005). \u201cYou think people would really have a finale where people are crucified? I\u2019m not sure people are ready for this.\u201d He laughingly concluded \u201cI might have to start that somewhere else other than America.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This could be interesting, since Life of Brian<\/i> has only two songs<\/a>, one of them the Shirley Bassey-esque, James Bond-esque opening theme song (hmmm, I could almost imagine a choir chanting, \u201cAnd his face became spotty\u2026 Yes, his face became spotty\u2026\u201d), and the other the infamous \u2018Always Look on the Bright Side of Life\u2019, sung by a crowd of crucified victims. So, on a musical level at least, they would have to create a fair bit of new material.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
