<\/a>The father becomes the son\u2026<\/p>\nTwelve years ago, Cliff Curtis played the father of Keisha Castle-Hughes in the acclaimed film Whale Rider<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n Four years later, Castle-Hughes played the Virgin Mary in The Nativity Story<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n Now comes word that Curtis may \u2014 may \u2014 be playing Mary\u2019s son Jesus in Clavius<\/a><\/i>, in which a Roman centurion investigates reports of the Resurrection.<\/p>\n It\u2019s all speculation at this point. But Thompson on Hollywood<\/a>, speaking to Curtis about another film at the Toronto film festival, mentions that Curtis is something of a method actor, and that he refuses to talk during interviews right now (though he will gesture with his hands and write notes on his laptop) because he is currently playing \u201ca man of God \u2026 who speaks only of God,\u201d in Curtis\u2019s words. <\/p>\n The interviewer then says: \u201cWord has it that man is Jesus Himself.\u201d<\/p>\n If the rumour is true, then it is further evidence of how filmmakers are trying to think beyond<\/a> the conventional blond-hair-and-blue-eyes depictions of Jesus of the past.<\/p>\n Curtis would, to my knowledge, be the first actor of Maori descent to play Jesus.<\/p>\n Interestingly, one of his Clavius<\/i> co-stars, Selva Rasalingam, has also played Jesus in a series of films produced as part of the Lumo Project<\/a>, and he is half-Tamil.<\/p>\n Speaking of Clavius<\/i>, Tom Felton, who is playing someone named Lucius, has posted a few new pictures from the set to his Instagram<\/a> account.
