A reader known only as \u201cwngl\u201d has posted a very interesting comment about Superman Returns<\/a><\/i> at Jeffrey Overstreet\u2019s blog<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

I was reminded of The New World<\/a>, actually, and the tension Pocahontas experiences between her two love interests. Like that film, Lois has chosen the man devoted to her through everything. That was a nice character touch, in a film that is otherwise almost entirely devoid of character or character development.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, if we follow this interpretation, Superman is the Colin Farrell<\/a> character \u2014 he\u2019s romantic, naive, irresponsible, and ultimately treacherous John Smith, leaving his smitten Pocahontas for a Kryptonian northwest passage that doesn\u2019t exist! And Cyclops<\/a> is Batman<\/a> \u2014 er, I mean, the James Marsden character in Superman Returns<\/i> is the Christian Bale<\/a> character in The New World<\/i> \u2014 he\u2019s steadfast, loyal, understanding John Rolfe! And the whole \u201creturns<\/a>\u201d bit is like the last 20 minutes of The New World<\/i>, where Smith comes back into Pocahontas\u2019s life.
