Of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?view2=worldwide&amp;yr=2004&amp;p=.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2004\u2019s top 25 movies<\/a>, only <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/newsbites-war-ebert-bourne-slump.html#3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Bourne Supremacy<\/a><\/i> was even marginally less reliant for its ranking on overseas revenues, at 38.9%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Catholic blogger and screenwriter <a href=\"http:\/\/churchofthemasses.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/2004-top-ten-list-i-generally-post-my.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Barbara Nicolosi<\/a> put <i>The Passion<\/i> at the top of her top ten list for that year because she said she was \u201cgoing to go with the global audience\u201d \u2014 which was a little odd, considering the film ranked #3 for the year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?yr=2004&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in North America<\/a> (behind <i>Shrek 2<\/i> and <i>Spider-Man 2<\/i>), #5 for the year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/yearly\/chart\/?view2=worldwide&amp;yr=2004&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">worldwide<\/a> (behind <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/harry-potter-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter 3<\/a><\/i> and <i>The Incredibles<\/i>), and #7 for the year overseas (behind <i>Troy<\/i> and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/al-gore-goes-looking-for-passion.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Day after Tomorrow<\/a><\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Nicolosi also actively protested the movie version of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/da-vinci-code-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Da Vinci Code<\/a><\/i> \u2014 so I cannot help but note that <i>The Da Vinci Code<\/i> has now outgrossed <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i> on the global charts.<\/p>\n<p>The information has not been posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/alltime\/world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/news\/sb\/2006-06-12\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> yet, but Studio Briefing reports via e-mail that <i>The Da Vinci Code<\/i> \u201chas now earned $453.2 million overseas and $642 million worldwide\u201d \u2014 which means it has made almost twice as much overseas as <i>The Passion<\/i> did, and it has surpassed the $611.9 million that <i>The Passion<\/i> earned worldwide two years ago.  (It has also surpassed <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/is-ice-age-2-bigger-than-pixar.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ice Age: The Meltdown<\/a><\/i> to become the top film of the year worldwide.)<\/p>\n<p>Methinks this indicates the \u201cglobal audience\u201d is a little more complicated than some people made it out to be.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back when The Passion of the Christ came out a couple of years ago, there was talk in some quarters about the film\u2019s supposedly global appeal \u2014 and some of that talk was a bit exaggerated, considering the film earned only 39.4% of its revenues overseas, definitely at the low end for modern blockbusters.
