{"id":2218,"date":"2006-06-07T00:49:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-07T00:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/06\/vifc-heads-up-malick-lynch-rossellini-etc\/"},"modified":"2006-06-07T00:49:00","modified_gmt":"2006-06-07T00:49:00","slug":"vifc-heads-up-malick-lynch-rossellini-etc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/06\/vifc-heads-up-malick-lynch-rossellini-etc.html","title":{"rendered":"VIFC heads up: Malick, Lynch, Rossellini, etc."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">It has only been open for a few months, but I am really beginning to like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vifc.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Vancity Theatre<\/a> at the Vancouver Int\u2019l Film Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The schedules there are a tad erratic, with films frequently paired together that have nothing to do with each other \u2014 tonight\u2019s double-bill, if you can call it that, was an excellent adaptation of Truman Capote\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0000AN4JE\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">In Cold Blood<\/a><\/i> (1967) and a documentary on same-sex marriage and pot legalization called <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0434922\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Escape to Canada<\/a><\/i> (2005) \u2014 but I\u2019ve caught a number of interesting items there the last few weeks, including all of last year\u2019s Oscar-nominated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/Sections\/Awards\/Academy_Awards_USA\/2006#Oscar_Best_Short_Film_Live_Action\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">live-action<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/Sections\/Awards\/Academy_Awards_USA\/2006#Oscar_Best_Short_Film_Animated\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">animated<\/a> short films, the editing documentary <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0470043\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Edge Codes<\/a><\/i> (2004), and a couple of mildly risqu\u00e9 1930s flicks directed by Alfred E. Green, namely <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0022802\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Dark Horse<\/a><\/i> (1932), a hilarious political satire co-starring Bette Davis, and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0023775\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Baby Face<\/a><\/i> (1933), which stars Barbra Stanwyck as a poor gal who sleeps her way to the top; one of her conquests is a young John Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, I picked up their newest program, and noticed that they will be running a retrospective of Terrence Malick\u2019s films \u2014 including the shorter, 135-minute version of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/terrence-malick-in-smell-o-vision.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New World<\/a><\/i> which I have not yet seen \u2014 in mid-July.  So it looks like I still have a chance to see it on the big screen after all!  And while I didn\u2019t care for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/kingdom-of-second-thoughts.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Thin Red Line<\/a><\/i> all that much both times I saw it circa 1998, it will be good to give <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0790739240\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Badlands<\/a><\/i> (1973) and especially <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/079215455X\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Days of Heaven<\/a><\/i> (1978) another look \u2014 and on the big screen, for once.<\/p>\n<p>Other upcoming items that are worth noting, some of which I have seen before, and a few of which I have not:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"disc\">\n<li>David Lynch\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000063JDE\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Blue Velvet<\/a><\/i> (1986) \u2014 June 9-15<\/li>\n<li>Dennis Hopper\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/vancouver-plays-itself.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Out of the Blue<\/a><\/i> (1980), filmed in Vancouver \u2014 June 12-13<\/li>\n<li>Roberto Rossellini\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0009WIE2U\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Flowers of St. Francis<\/a><\/i> (1950) and Guy Maddin\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0477785\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">My Dad is 100 Years Old<\/a><\/i> (2005), starring Rossellini\u2019s daughter Isabella \u2014 June 26-29<\/li>\n<li>Blaine Thurier\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0407972\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Male Fantasy<\/a><\/i> (2004), featuring a cameo by <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/chattaways-on-film-redux.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my sister Monica<\/a> \u2014 August 6<\/li>\n<li>Powell &amp; Pressburger\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00000IPHT\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Red Shoes<\/a><\/i> (1948) \u2014 August 11-17<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And, of course, many other items as well.
