So it\u2019s easy to see why the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20060601\/114922063600.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> predicted, on Thursday:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After its $123 million opening last weekend, 20th Century Fox\u2019s third \u201cX-Men\u201d movie is a shoo-in for the top spot again, while Universal\u2019s \u201cBreak-Up\u201d will vie for the second slot with Sony\u2019s \u201cThe Da Vinci Code\u201d and Paramount\u2019s \u201cOver the Hedge.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But, whoops, it looks like audiences may be having other ideas.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/daily\/chart\/?sortdate=2006-06-02&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">BoxOfficeMojo.com<\/a> reports that <i>The Break-Up<\/i> made an estimated $13.8 million on opening day yesterday, thus handily beating <i>X-Men<\/i>\u2018s $10.4 million; meanwhile, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/05\/will-over-hedge-outgross-da-vinci.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Over the Hedge<\/a><\/i> is narrowly beating <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/da-vinci-code-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Da Vinci Code<\/a><\/i> in the just-over-$5-million range.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Break-Up<\/i>\u2018s box-office performance is all the more remarkable because it\u2019s playing in only 3,070 theatres, whereas the other three films are all playing in between 3,714 and 3,993 theatres.<\/p>\n<p>Looks like <i>X-Men<\/i> doesn\u2019t have word-of-mouth on its side.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>X-Men: The Last Stand had one of the biggest openings of all time last week, and The Break-Up, a badly-reviewed \u201canti-romantic comedy\u201d, is the only new wide release this week.
