Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20060401\/114395141100.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> reports that <i>Hanuman<\/i> was \u201ca surprise hit\u201d and a significant milestone in Indian animation; until now, the industry \u201chas grown so far on the back of an explosion in outsourcing of animated computer images,\u201d but now, major figures in the industry are \u201cmoving away from outsourcing to claim ownership of their products and share copyrights and profits.\u201d  Coming up: titles like <i>Lord Krishna<\/i>, <i>Bombay Dogs<\/i> and <i>Kittu<\/i>, about \u201ca clever monkey\u201d \u2014 plus Walt Disney has bought the rights to <i>Hanuman<\/i>.  The question is, compared to other foreign cartoons that Disney has acquired, will this be one of those classy theatrical releases like <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/mr-and-mrs-howl.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Howl\u2019s Moving Castle<\/a><\/i> (2004), or will it be one of those crappy straight-to-video deals like <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/3-wise-men-not-exactly-treasure.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The 3 Wise Men<\/a><\/i> (2003)?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six months ago, I noted that an animated film about the Hindu god Hanuman \u2014 the first full-length cartoon produced in India \u2014 was on its way.
