{"id":2323,"date":"2006-03-28T08:33:00","date_gmt":"2006-03-28T08:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/03\/the-ten-commandments-what-sort-of-colour\/"},"modified":"2006-03-28T08:33:00","modified_gmt":"2006-03-28T08:33:00","slug":"the-ten-commandments-what-sort-of-colour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/03\/the-ten-commandments-what-sort-of-colour.html","title":{"rendered":"The Ten Commandments &#8212; what sort of colour?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Hmmm, I may have to retract that part of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/katherine-orrison-interviews-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my interview<\/a> with Katherine Orrison where I said that the DVD version of the silent version of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/more-religious-epics-coming-to-dvd.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Ten Commandments<\/a><\/i> (1923) had a \u201chand-tinted\u201d version of the Exodus sequence but not a Technicolor version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I have always known, or at least believed, that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/6300215431\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">VHS version<\/a> of the film had the two-strip Technicolor version; whereas the DVD version is black-and-white, except for a bonus feature which, according to the menu, shows the Exodus on its own in a \u201chand-tinted\u201d version \u2014 a claim that I initially took at face value.<\/p>\n<p>But last night, I dug out my VHS copy of the film and paused a few shots and took photos of those shots off of my TV screen, to compare with the equivalent screen captures from the DVD.  And it seems to me that there is no difference between the VHS\u2019s colour shots and the DVD bonus feature\u2019s colour shots.  I suspect the DVD producers goofed when they called this footage \u201chand-tinted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Below are three examples.
