{"id":2376,"date":"2006-02-21T23:49:00","date_gmt":"2006-02-21T23:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/02\/china-segregates-toons-from-real-people\/"},"modified":"2006-02-21T23:49:00","modified_gmt":"2006-02-21T23:49:00","slug":"china-segregates-toons-from-real-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2006\/02\/china-segregates-toons-from-real-people.html","title":{"rendered":"China segregates &#8216;toons from real people"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">I can think of many reasons to ban <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0000AYJXR\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Space Jam<\/a><\/i> (1996), but this ain\u2019t one of them.  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117938596?categoryid=19&amp;cs=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> has the scoop:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jessica Rabbit isn\u2019t welcome in China \u2014 and Michael Jordan shouldn\u2019t show up with any of his Looney Toons pals.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the more bizarre orders from China\u2019s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, TV shows and films featuring human thesps with animated companions will be banned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese human live-action, so-called animation pieces will not receive distribution or distribution licenses,\u201d read the order, issued Feb. 15. However, films and shows that have already received permits will continue to air.<\/p>\n<p>CGI and 2-D characters alongside human actors jeopardize \u201cthe broadcast order of homemade animation and mislead their development,\u201d according to a report from the state-run Xinhua News Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Order comes as the Chinese government attempts to increase local production of Mandarin-language toons and cut the amount of foreign animated programming appearing on Chinese television.<\/p>\n<p>However, national and provincial children\u2019s channels are struggling to acquire enough content to meet demand or even fill their own programming schedules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarft\u2019s notice is a clear indicator that, despite government support, the local animation industry is still struggling,\u201d said David Wolf, CEO of Beijing-based consultancy Wolf Group Asia. \u201cUnfortunately, simply clearing more airtime isn\u2019t going to make the product any better or more competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chinese regulatory authorities are notoriously skittish regarding broadcast and film themes that include the supernatural or fantasy, including talking animals. \u201cBabe\u201d was banned on the basis that animals can\u2019t talk and some viewers would be confused.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, if CGI characters and talking animals are both prohibited, then what about all those movies featuring characters like <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/middle-earth-marathon.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gollum<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/oscar-nominations-my-own-two-bits.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jar-Jar Binks<\/a>?  To say nothing of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/12\/king-kong-few-belated-comments.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">King Kong<\/a> or that <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/oh-dear-lord-no.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">talking lion<\/a>, who, last I heard, had been guaranteed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickstaub.com\/links_view.php?record_id=5068\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">safe passage<\/a> to China.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can think of many reasons to ban Space Jam (1996), but this ain\u2019t one of them.
