Then again, one of my priests keeps reminding us that the Virgin Mary was probably about 13 years old when she bore Christ \u2014 that being the typical age at which peasant girls got married \u2014 so, on one level, I guess it\u2019s fitting that the director of <i>Thirteen<\/i>, a gritty, edgy drama that made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianchristianity.com\/cgi-bin\/bc.cgi?bc\/bccn\/0204\/23envelope\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my top ten list for 2003<\/a>, should be tackling this story.  And come to think of it, <i>Thirteen<\/i> featured Jeremy Sisto, star of the 1999 mini-series <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1573629235\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus<\/a><\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianchristianity.com\/cgi-bin\/bc.cgi?bc\/bccn\/0600\/jesus\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my review<\/a>), as Holly Hunter\u2019s boyfriend \u2014 not that that means anything.<\/p>\n<p>For more info and comments, check out the blogs run by <a href=\"http:\/\/lookingcloser.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/shocking-specials-thirteen-director-to.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeffrey<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/lookingcloser.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/wednesday-specials-natvity-chris-penn.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Overstreet<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/biblefilms.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/new-film-on-nativity-in-works.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matt<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/biblefilms.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/writer-mike-rich-on-nativity.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Page<\/a>, the latter of whom looks at earlier films on the Nativity \u2014 pretty much all of which have been small arthouse films or straight-to-TV fare.  In the major-studio Bible epics, the Nativity rarely warranted more than a prologue.<\/p>\n<p>FEB 9 UPDATE:  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20060208\/113939275000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> covers this, and adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In other religious news, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment recently acquired home video rights to the independently produced \u201cColor of the Cross,\u201d directed by and starring Jean Claude La Marre as an African Jesus.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interesting!  Could be fun to see how it compares to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/son-of-man-gets-people-talking.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Son of Man<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>FEB 10 UPDATE:  I just noticed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117936783\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this<\/a> <i>Variety<\/i> article from late January says <i>The Nativity<\/i> \u201ccovers the two-year period of Mary and Joseph\u2019s life, culminating in their leaving Nazareth and journeying 100 miles to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus.\u201d  Two years, eh?  I wonder if it will work the rebellion of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%205:33-39;&amp;version=31;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Judas the Galilean<\/a> into the story, <i>a la<\/i> the TV-movie <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0079535\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mary and Joseph: A Story of Faith<\/a><\/i> (1979).  It coincided with the census, after all.<\/p>\n<p>MAR 17 UPDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-nativity-evan-casino.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Keisha Castle-Hughes<\/a>, the now-15-year-old star of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0000CABBW\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Whale Rider<\/a><\/i> (2002), has been cast as the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p>MAR 21 UPDATE:  <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/newsbites-nativity-update-tsotsi.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shohreh Aghdashloo<\/a> has been cast as Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist.  In some ways, this film is shaping up as a reunion of 2003\u2019s Oscar nominees.  Aghdashloo had a Best Supporting Actress nomination for <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0001DMVBC\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">House of Sand and Fog<\/a><\/i>, and so did Holly Hunter, for Hardwicke\u2019s <i>Thirteen<\/i>; they both lost to <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0001MDP3G\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cold Mountain<\/a><\/i>\u2018s Ren\u00e9e Zellweger.
