My computer\u2019s in for repairs, and the laptop I\u2019m borrowing in its place is rather old and ridiculously slow, and it just froze up on me as I was putting the finishing touches on a post about the Brokeback Mountain<\/a><\/i> controversy \u2014 a post that had already taken much, much longer to write than it normally would have. So, in its place, I now post these newsbite quickies:<\/p>\n

1.<\/a> The New York Times<\/a><\/i> notes that conservative Christian film critics \u2014 or at least some, anyway \u2014 are becoming more \u201csophisticated\u201d in their approach to movies like Brokeback Mountain<\/i> and Vera Drake<\/a><\/i>. Meanwhile, Terry Mattingly at the journalism blog GetReligion.org<\/a> predicts that Brokeback Mountain<\/i> will be \u201cone of the three or four hottest religion\/cultural stories of the year in 2006.\u201d<\/p>\n

2.<\/a> At the junket for Kingdom of Heaven<\/a><\/i>, various people involved in the film said a longer \u201cdirector\u2019s cut\u201d was in the works \u2014 and now, says the Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i>, it looks like that longer cut has become a reality:<\/p>\n

20th Century Fox will release theatrically a director\u2019s cut of Ridley Scott\u2019s Crusades epic \u201cKingdom of Heaven\u201d on Friday, the studio said Thursday. The film, which centers on a young Frenchman (Orlando Bloom) who discovers his destiny as a knight amid the clash between Muslims and Christians over the Holy Land a millennium ago, will unspool exclusively at the Laemmle Fairfax Theatre in Los Angeles. For the new cut, Scott added 45 minutes to the original release\u2019s 145-minute running time. \u201cWith his new director\u2019s cut, Ridley Scott has brought an exciting new dimension to \u2018Kingdom of Heaven,\u2019 \u201d Fox president of domestic distribution Bruce Snyder said. \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to bring this new version of the film to the big screen, where it belongs.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3.<\/a> FilmStew.com<\/a> says John Landis is going to direct The Missionary Position<\/i>:<\/p>\n

Distribution and casting plans for the film weren\u2019t made clear, but a vague outline of the story has been released: The comedy details a tough criminal who attempts to evade capture and recover his loot by posing as a missionary\u2026only to find his new role might have been a worse choice than jail. Glen Brackenridge and Curtis Brien wrote the script.<\/p>\n

Landis calls the screenplay both funny and extremely relevant. The filmmaker is expected to go to work on The Missionary Position<\/i> this summer\u2026after he finishes work on Bat Boy<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sounds like a premise that has been used in everything from We\u2019re No Angels<\/a><\/i> (1989) to Charlie Chaplin<\/a>\u2018s The Pilgrim<\/a><\/i> (1923; my preview<\/a>, my essay<\/a>) \u2014 though usually to a more redemptive end. Oh, and while it\u2019s possible Landis\u2019s upcoming projects have nothing in common with each other, I note that Bat Boy<\/i> is based on the play by Brian Flemming<\/a>, who I interviewed several months ago when he released his atheist documentary The God Who Wasn\u2019t There<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
