{"id":25227,"date":"2014-12-11T21:50:36","date_gmt":"2014-12-12T05:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=25227"},"modified":"2014-12-15T12:20:31","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T20:20:31","slug":"box-office-forecast-how-will-exodus-gods-and-kings-perform-theatrically-compared-to-noah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/12\/box-office-forecast-how-will-exodus-gods-and-kings-perform-theatrically-compared-to-noah.html","title":{"rendered":"Box-office forecast: How will <i>Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/i> perform theatrically compared to <i>Noah<\/i>?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/exodus-scott-bale.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/03\/exodus-scott-bale-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"exodus-scott-bale\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14928\"><\/a><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/box-office-preview-exodus-isnt-756553\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> says <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exodus-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> may gross between $25 million and $30 million when it opens in North America this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>That would be slightly ahead of the $25.6 million that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/son-of-god\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Son of God<\/a><\/i> opened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/is-seeing-a-bible-movie-on-opening-weekend-more-important-than-going-to-church-is-it-a-way-of-honouring-god.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in February<\/a>, but considerably behind the $43.7 million that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/noah-2014\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i> opened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/noah-has-a-big-first-weekend-but-what-do-audiences-think.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">in March<\/a> \u2014 but movies that open in December tend to stay afloat over the holidays, so <i>Exodus<\/i> could still be the year\u2019s biggest Bible movie when all is said and done. (<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prince-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Prince of Egypt<\/a><\/i>, to cite one precedent, opened in December 1998 to only $14.5 million and still grossed $101.4 million in total \u2014 which is slightly more than <i>Noah<\/i> made in North America.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->To look at this another way: <i>Son of God<\/i> opened to $25.6 million and grossed $59.7 million in total, and <i>Noah<\/i> opened to $43.7 million and grossed $101.2 million in total, so both films made about 2.3 times their opening \u2014 but there is good reason to believe that a film released just before Christmas can have a bigger multiple than that.<\/p>\n<p>An opening of over $25 million would give this film the sixth- or seventh-best opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=ridleyscott.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ridley Scott\u2019s career<\/a>. The top five, all of which opened to more than $34 million, include two sequels (<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/hannibal-2001\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hannibal<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prometheus\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Prometheus<\/a><\/i>) and three Russell Crowe movies (<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/01\/newsbites-batman-harry-justice-gangster.html#4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">American Gangster<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2010\/04\/robin-hood-and-the-magna-carta-redux.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Robin Hood<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/gladiator-2000\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Gladiator<\/a><\/i>). A sixth film, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/black-hawk-down\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Black Hawk Down<\/a><\/i>, opened in limited release but then earned $28.6 million in its first weekend of wide release. The other fifteen films directed by Scott all opened to less than $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>An opening of over $25 million would also give this film the fifth- or sixth-best opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=christianbale.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christian Bale\u2019s career<\/a>, or possibly even the seventh-best, behind the three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/dark-knight\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Batman movies<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/terminator-salvation\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Terminator movie<\/a>, and possibly <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/01\/terminator-update-casting-news-and-a-change-in-producers.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Public Enemies<\/a><\/i> (which opened to $25.3 million in 2009).
