Ushpizin!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">Methinks we\u2019re overdue for another batch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getreligion.org\/?p=1144\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">GetReligion.org<\/a> notes the peculiar lack of religious content in the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calendarlive.com\/movies\/cl-ca-phoenix23oct23,0,7677959.story?track=tottext\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/i>\u2018 recent feature on Joaquin Phoenix, who grew up with missionary hippie parents and plays the deeply spiritual Johnny Cash in the upcoming film <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0358273\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Walk the Line<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20051023\/113009893600.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> notes that the CGI cartoon <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/newsbites-galore.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chicken Little<\/a><\/i>, the first major animated Disney feature since they shut down their traditional hand-drawn animation division, is \u201ccritical for Disney reputation\u201d.  The story notes that Disney \u201cdabbled\u201d in CGI before, with <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00003CXHS\/petertchatta\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dinosaur<\/a><\/i> (2000; <a href=\"http:\/\/christianweek.org\/stories\/vol14\/no05\/culture.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my review<\/a>), which featured semi-realistic animals against live-action backgrounds.  But, um, that movie sucked, so it ain\u2019t the most encouraging precedent.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> They say that sex scenes between married actors tend not to work, so if you got one of them to <i>direct<\/i> the scene, you could take their collaboration to a whole new level of awkwardness.  Hence, <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20051019\/112974935400.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reuters<\/a> reports that, for Willem Dafoe, who has been in his share of controversial (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/gonna-buy-five-copies-for-my-mother.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Last Temptation of Christ<\/a><\/i>, 1988) and embarrassing (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00006L92K\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Body of Evidence<\/a><\/i>, 1993) sex scenes, \u201cperhaps the toughest sex scenes yet were in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0439878\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a new film<\/a> co-starring and directed by his wife.\u201d  Yeepers.  Someone call <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/09\/newsbites-violence-flightplan-muslim.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Cronenberg<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> The <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/ap\/20051021\/112994484000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Associated Press<\/a> reports that \u201cthe star of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hanuman-thefilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">India\u2019s first animated feature film<\/a> is a genuine deity drawn from the Hindu pantheon. . . . In promos being aired on Indian TV, Hanuman, wearing an orange loincloth, gold armlets and anklets, wields a mace as he battles fire-breathing dragons and ferocious demons in the 90-minute film.\u201d  Director V.G. Samant \u201cstudied Hindu scriptures for more than two years with some 60 animators and researchers to adapt them to celluloid for the movie\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> Is the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0002JP572\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Friday the 13th<\/a><\/i> series really celebratings its 25th anniversary?  The <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/ap\/20051023\/113009856000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Associated Press<\/a> says it is, and it says there is talk of another cross-over sequel, <i>plus<\/i> a remake.  Oh joy.  Just for the record, the only films in this franchise that I\u2019ve seen are <i>Parts <a href=\"http:\/\/artsandfaith.com\/index.php?act=findpost&amp;pid=4425\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">I<\/a><\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/artsandfaith.com\/index.php?act=findpost&amp;pid=5798\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>II<\/i>, <i>III<\/i><\/a>, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/artsandfaith.com\/index.php?act=findpost&amp;pid=6375\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">IV<\/a><\/i> and <i>X<\/i> \u2014 most of which I saw a couple years ago, as research, when I thought there was a chance that I might see <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0000VCZMK\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Freddy Vs. Jason<\/a><\/i> (2003).  As it turns out, I didn\u2019t.  Ah well.  (One nitpick: an actress in this article says, \u201cI was Jason\u2019s first victim,\u201d but I suspect she was actually Jason\u2019s <i>mother\u2019s<\/i> first victim.)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">6.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/va\/20051020\/112982365000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> says <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/04\/sun-and-snow-and-bad-cold.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sahara<\/a><\/i> director Breck Eisner and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/6305308659\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pleasantville<\/a><\/i> (1998; <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/group\/onfilm\/message\/4523\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">my comments<\/a>) writer-director Gary Ross are teaming up for a remake <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0002NRRRY\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/a><\/i> (1954); Ross\u2019s father was one of the writers on the original.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been a fan of the original, but for this I would love to just update and modernize the film,\u201d Eisner said in an interview. \u201cWe see it as an aggressive sci-fi horror film in the vein of \u2018Alien\u2019 or like John Carpenter\u2019s \u2018The Thing.\u2019 We want to elevate the source material.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">7.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/thr\/reviews\/review_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001308023\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> reviews <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0426155\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ushpizin<\/a><\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the charming comedy-parable \u201cUshpizin,\u201d religious orthodoxy inspires not unbending dogma but humble, sometimes baffled spiritual striving by its embraceable, flawed characters.
