Wow. While Howard Shore has been prepping the extended Lord of the Rings<\/i> CDs<\/a>, he has also been composing and recording music for Peter Jackson\u2019s next film, the retro-remake of King Kong<\/a><\/i>. (Click here<\/a> for a KongIsKing.net production diary to that effect, which went online four weeks ago.) But now Soundtrack.net<\/a> reports that, with just two months to go until the film\u2019s release, Shore has been replaced by James Newton Howard.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of the new Howard\u2019s scores<\/a>, which include the films of M. Night Shyamalan<\/a>, Batman Begins<\/a><\/i> and my personal favorite: Snow Falling on Cedars<\/a><\/i>. So I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll do a great job, even with all the pressure of scoring this epic movie in just a few weeks.<\/p>\n

But still, this is an odd development.<\/p>\n

UPDATE: James Newton Howard\u2019s unofficial site<\/a> confirms the rumour, but Mikael Carlsson<\/a> says<\/a> he just received an e-mail from Shore\u2019s publicist stating: \u201cThis is not true. Emphatically no, absolutely not.\u201d As Carlsson asks, \u201cExactly what is going on???\u201d<\/p>\n

UPPERDATE: It\u2019s official. Universal Pictures<\/a> has just sent out a press release confirming the rumours:<\/p>\n

Peter Jackson made the following statement: \u201cI have greatly enjoyed my collaborations with Howard Shore, whose musical themes made immeasurable contributions to \u2018The Lord of the Rings\u2019 trilogy. During the last few weeks, Howard and I came to realize that we had differing creative aspirations for the score of \u2018King Kong.\u2019 Rather than waste time arguing with a friend and trying to unify our points of view, we decided amicably to let another composer score the film. I\u2019m looking forward to working with James Newton Howard, a composer whose work I\u2019ve long admired, and I thank Howard Shore, whose talent is surpassed only by his graciousness.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
