It has been nearly three months since James Doohan died<\/a>, but only now has Mark Steyn<\/a> been able to post the full version of the obituary he wrote for last month\u2019s Atlantic Monthly<\/a><\/i>. It\u2019s a fun read.<\/span><\/p>\n

One slight correction, though, if I may. Steyn writes:<\/p>\n

With the Congressional Record awash in \u201cBeam me up, Scottys\u201d, eventually somebody decided it was time for Star Trek<\/i> to put the famous words belatedly in Captain Kirk\u2019s mouth. So, after the best part of quarter of a century, he finally delivered them to his engineer in the fourth Trek<\/i> movie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not quite. What Kirk actually says to Scotty in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home<\/a><\/i> (1986) \u2014 AKA \u201cthe one with the whales\u201d \u2014 is, \u201cScotty, beam me up.\u201d It is<\/i> the closest he ever came to uttering the famous phrase, but it\u2019s not quite there yet. And, incidentally, in context, it\u2019s a somewhat odd phrase, since at the time Kirk says it, Scotty is standing inside a Klingon Bird of Prey in Golden Gate Park, and Kirk is standing beside the ship \u2014 so he\u2019s really going sideways, not \u201cup\u201d. (Then again, why is he beaming<\/i> into a cloaked<\/i> ship, when he could simply walk up the ramp? Well, because the writers couldn\u2019t think of any other<\/i> way for Dr. Gillian Taylor to trick Kirk into bringing her aboard\u2026)<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
