Now it has the steepest second-weekend drop.<\/p>\n<p><i>Exodus<\/i> earned an estimated $8.1 million <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2014&amp;wknd=51&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this weekend<\/a>, which represents a drop of 66.6% since last week. (Yes, that\u2019s the actual number being floated by Box Office Mojo.) That\u2019s steeper than the 59.5% by which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/son-of-god\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Son of God<\/a><\/i> dropped in March and the 61% by which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/noah-2014\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i> dropped in April.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><i>Exodus<\/i>, which opened at #1 last week, had to settle for #4 this week, behind the third installments in the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/hobbit\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Hobbit<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/night-at-the-museum\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Night at the Museum<\/a><\/i> franchises as well as <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/annie\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Annie<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this, the steepest drop for a Ridley Scott film had been the 59.4% by which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prometheus\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Prometheus<\/a><\/i> dropped <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=weekend&amp;id=prometheus.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in June 2012<\/a>. The second-weekend gross for <i>Exodus<\/i> is also smaller than the $9.6 million that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/kingdom-of-heaven\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Kingdom of Heaven<\/a><\/i>, Ridley Scott\u2019s previous epic box-office disappointment, earned during its second weekend <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?page=weekend&amp;id=kingdomofheaven.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in May 2005<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The box-office boost provided by the Christmas season <i>could<\/i> lift <i>Exodus<\/i> beyond the $59.7 million that <i>Son of God<\/i> earned earlier this year. But it seems doubtful that <i>Exodus<\/i> will come anywhere close to approaching the earnings of <i>Noah<\/i> or <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/prince-of-egypt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Prince of Egypt<\/a><\/i>, both of which grossed just over $100 million in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where <i>Exodus<\/i> currently ranks among the Bible films of the past 35 years:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2004 \u2014 $370.8 million \u2014 <i>The Passion of the Christ<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1998 \u2014 $101.4 million \u2014 <i>The Prince of Egypt<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 $101.2 million \u2014 <i>Noah<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2014 \u2014 $59.7 million \u2014 <i>Son of God<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2009 \u2014 $43.3 million \u2014 <i>Year One<\/i>\n<\/li><li><b>2014 \u2014 $39.8 million \u2014 <i>Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/i><\/b>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $37.6 million \u2014 <i>The Nativity Story<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1981 \u2014 $31.7 million \u2014 <i>History of the World, Part I<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2002 \u2014 $25.6 million \u2014 <i>Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1979 \u2014 $20.0 million \u2014 <i>Monty Python\u2019s Life of Brian<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1980 \u2014 $14.2 million \u2014 <i>Wholly Moses!<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2006 \u2014 $13.4 million \u2014 <i>One Night with the King<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1988 \u2014 $8.4 million \u2014 <i>The Last Temptation of Christ<\/i>\n<\/li><li>1985 \u2014 $5.1 million \u2014 <i>King David<\/i>\n<\/li><li>2003 \u2014 $4.1 million \u2014 <i>The Gospel of John<\/i><\/li><\/ul>\n<p>The real question now is how well <i>Exodus<\/i> will do overseas. Only three Bible films have made much of a dent at the foreign box office in the past few decades: <i>Noah<\/i> is tops with $261.4 million, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/passion-of-the-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a><\/i> comes a close second with $241.1 million, and <i>The Prince of Egypt<\/i> places third with $117.2 million. <i>Exodus<\/i> has already earned $61.2 million overseas and has not yet opened in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/exodusmovie\/app_208195102528120\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">many countries<\/a>, so it seems a safe bet that it will do better than <i>The Prince of Egypt<\/i>, at least.
