{"id":25858,"date":"2014-12-28T12:24:42","date_gmt":"2014-12-28T20:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/?p=25858"},"modified":"2014-12-29T08:17:26","modified_gmt":"2014-12-29T16:17:26","slug":"box-office-exodus-gods-and-kings-falls-some-more-in-its-third-week-while-most-other-films-go-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/12\/box-office-exodus-gods-and-kings-falls-some-more-in-its-third-week-while-most-other-films-go-up.html","title":{"rendered":"Box office: <i>Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/i> falls some more in its third week while most other films go up"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/12\/exodus-DF-04525.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/227\/2014\/12\/exodus-DF-04525-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"exodus-DF-04525\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25859\"><\/a><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/tag\/exodus-2015\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/a><\/i> is still falling at the box office, but not as fast it was.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, the post-Christmas surge at the box office put the brakes on the film\u2019s slide, so that it earned an estimated $6.7 million <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/weekend\/chart\/?view=&amp;yr=2014&amp;wknd=52&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this weekend<\/a> and dropped only 16.7% compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/12\/box-office-exodus-gods-and-kings-loses-its-audience-faster-than-any-recent-bible-movie-or-ridley-scott-film.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">last weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is better than the 46.7% and 55.7% by which <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/03\/son-of-god-news-round-up-box-office-update-thoughts-on-peter-barts-open-letter-to-mark-burnett-and-more.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Son of God<\/a><\/i> and <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2014\/04\/box-office-update-noah-slips-in-n-america-but-stays-strong-overseas-while-gods-not-dead-sets-a-new-record.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Noah<\/a><\/i> dropped during their third weeks, respectively. <i>Exodus<\/i> has also grossed $52.5 million in total as of this Sunday, which puts it ahead of where <i>Son of God<\/i> was at a comparable point in its release for the first time ever.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->However, <i>Exodus<\/i> was one of only three films in the Top 15 that made <i>less<\/i> money this weekend than last weekend. The others were <i>The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies<\/i>, which kept the #1 spot but slid 24.3%, and <i>Penguins of Madagascar<\/i>, which slid 6.5% and is on track to be the lowest-grossing computer-animated <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/franchises\/chart\/?id=dwanimation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">DreamWorks cartoon<\/a> ever (not counting the Aardman co-production <i>Flushed Away<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Thanks in part to three new films (<i>Unbroken<\/i>, <i>Into the Woods<\/i>, <i>The Gambler<\/i>) and a fourth that went into wider release (<i>The Imitation Game<\/i>), <i>Exodus<\/i> \u2014 which opened at #1 just two weeks ago \u2014 slid to 9th place at the box office this weekend. It also fell behind <i>The Hunger Games: Mockingay Part 1<\/i>, which is now in its sixth week.<\/p>\n<p>The $52.5 million earned by <i>Exodus<\/i> so far in North America makes it the 8th-highest-grossing <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Director&amp;id=ridleyscott.htm&amp;sort=gross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ridley Scott<\/a> movie (out of 22 movies), behind three Russell Crowe movies (<i>Gladiator<\/i>, <i>American Gangster<\/i>, <i>Robin Hood<\/i>), two sequels (<i>Hannibal<\/i>, <i>Prometheus<\/i>), <i>Black Hawk Down<\/i> and <i>Alien<\/i> \u2014 all of which earned over $80 million.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/people\/chart\/?view=Actor&amp;id=christianbale.htm&amp;sort=gross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christian Bale<\/a>, it will soon be his 10th-highest-grossing film in North America, behind four \u201cfranchise\u201d movies (the <i>Dark Knight<\/i> trilogy, <i>Terminator Salvation<\/i>), two David O. Russell movies (<i>American Hustle<\/i>, <i>The Fighter<\/i>) and three supporting roles (<i>Pocahontas<\/i>, <i>Public Enemies<\/i>, <i>Shaft<\/i>) \u2014 all of which earned over $70 million.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell if <i>Exodus<\/i> moves any higher up either of those charts.<\/p>\n<p>Overseas, <i>Exodus<\/i> was released in several new territories this week and has raised its foreign total to $96.3 million, thus giving it a global total of $148.8 million.<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2014\/12\/international-box-office-hobbit-battle-five-armies-exodus-pk-into-the-woods-unbroken-water-diviner-annie-results-1201337477\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deadline<\/a> has a more detailed breakdown of the overseas figures:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Off muscular bows in Brazil, France, the UK and Germany, Ridley Scott\u2019s <em><strong>Exodus: Gods And Kings<\/strong><\/em> earned $31M on 6,671 screens in 39 markets this holiday frame. Although the film won\u2019t be getting released in some Middle Eastern markets, the international cume is a burning bush away from the $100M mark with $97.03M. <strong>Brazil<\/strong> opened at No. 1 and earned $6.68M from 901 dates this session giving Fox its second biggest opening ever in the market. In <strong>France<\/strong>, it was No. 3 behind local heartwarmer <em><strong>The B\u00e9lier Family<\/strong><\/em> and <em>The Hobbit<\/em> with $5.35M from 587; the <strong>UK<\/strong> was No. 2 behind <em>Hobbit<\/em> with $4.25M from 750; and <strong>Germany<\/strong> was No. 3 behind <em>Hobbit<\/em> and Til Schweiger\u2019s Warner drama <em><strong>Honig In Kopf<\/strong><\/em> with $3.64M at 597. Among other markets, <strong>Mexico<\/strong> was up 8% in its fourth frame for a cume of $11.2M; <strong>Spain<\/strong> was also up 11% in its fourth outing with a $9.8M cume and <strong>Holland<\/strong> was up 28% for a $1.66M cume.
