And now for the meta-Jesus movies (or should that be Jesus meta-movies?)!  <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/iw\/20050830\/112542522000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">IndieWIRE<\/a> says Abel Ferrara\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/newsbites-toronto-mormons.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mary<\/a><\/i>, which premieres in Venice and Toronto next month, will also open the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sansebastianfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">San Sebastian Film Festival<\/a>\u2018s Zabaltegi section: \u201cThe film is a tale of the filming of a movie about the life of Jesus and how it draws the actress (Juliette Binoche) playing the part of Mary Magdalene into a spiritual crisis of profound consequences involving the director of the film, (Matthew Modine) and a New York journalist (Forest Whitaker).\u201d  Hmmm, I wonder how it will compare to Pasolini\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/pasolinis-la-ricotta.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">La ricotta<\/a><\/i> (1963) or Arcand\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/jesus-of-montreal-lost-in-translation.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus of Montreal<\/a><\/i> (1989), which admittedly was about a play and not a film, but still\u2026<\/p>\n<p>2. Having finished <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/war-of-worlds-review-is-up.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">War of the Worlds<\/a><\/i>, Steven Spielberg is now going to re-make another 1950s disaster movie.  <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/fs\/20050830\/112542622300.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">FilmStew.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/mv\/news\/eo\/20050829\/112537332000.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">E! Online<\/a> report that he has taken over the producing chores on a remake of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00005NG6A\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">When Worlds Collide<\/a><\/i> (1951) \u2014 a film which, incidentally, inspired one of my favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielamos.com\/da\/voxhumana\/whenworldscollide.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Daniel Amos<\/a> songs, albeit in title only.  But wait \u2014 didn\u2019t Spielberg pretty much already do this with <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0002V7OI8\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deep Impact<\/a><\/i> (1998), which he executive-produced?<\/p>\n<p>3. <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/08\/26\/AR2005082600332.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/i>, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.videobusiness.com\/article\/CA6251599.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Video Business<\/a><\/i> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/news\/sb\/2005-08-30#film3\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Studio Briefing<\/a> all have items up now on the demise of the VHS format.  The latest development?  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/08\/but-i-thought-lucas-was-buddhist.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Star Wars: Episode III \u2013 Revenge of the Sith<\/a><\/i> will be released on DVD <i>only<\/i>.  Ah, brings back memories of how the \u201cdirector\u2019s cut\u201d of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/more-things-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lawrence of Arabia<\/a><\/i> (1962\/1989) was one of the very first major studio films not to be released on Beta.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a handful of news items. 1.
